Tori made a trip to RBC this morning which really wasn't surprising since she was surfing green last night. I was kind of expecting her to go higher but she didn't and I'm so happy that she has already returned to the Blue zone. Well done Tori. Anyway seeing its OLd Timer's Day and I didn't tell Missy Kitty's story last week I thought I'd share her journey with you now.

I first met Tori the day she was born on Canada Day 1996. Her Mama Simba was my parents landlord's cat and my kids had been begging me to let them have one of the kittens. I had never had a cat before and wasn't really sure I wanted one but they talked me into it. Five weeks later we came to pick up our new pet. We didn't know which of the kittens we were taking. They were playing in the front yard when we got there so while the kids were playing with them I took the kitty carrier up the 12 steps to my parents 4plex. Mom and I were talking and all of a sudden we heard a little meow. Tori had climbed up all those stairs and was sitting in the carrier proud as proud could be. She looked like a little queen surveying her land. There and then we knew she was ours and I named her Victoria which quickly became Tori.

Tori has always been a feisty little girl but in a nice way. She always lets you know her displeasure by giving looks that can kill with her beautiful piercing green eyes but she never scratches or bites. She rules over the boys with an iron paw. They live in awe of her. What she says goes. Her feistiness has served her well.

Tori was diagnosed with the Dire Beasties in June 2005 just before her 9th birthday. She had been loosing weight, was drinking alot and started peeing on my son's bed so I took her in for a checkup. She was seen by the new vet at the practice, Dr Doug. I really liked him from the second he picked her up and cuddled her while we talked. The next day he called with her lab results saying "I have the results on our little girl Tori ." I knew there and then that he was a keeper. Some of the first things he said to me was that we should switch to a wet diet and home test. So we started the Sugar Dance. Less than a week later Tori became very ill. She looked awful, couldn't eat, her eyes very draining badly and her BG was 33 (594). I rushed her back in and when Doug looked in her mouth there was a pus pocket over one of her top canines. The next day she had an emergency dental followed by a month of antibiotics.

After that things went well. After about a year I decided to switch to a raw meat diet mainly because Rocky's IBD was becoming very severe. Within weeks Tori was OTJ and stayed in remission for over 2 years until Oct 08. Tori was having an acute exasperation of her arthritis and degenerative disc in her back and was having a lot of pain. We decided to try a very small dose of Metacam for a short while. Unfortunately she had a very bad reaction to the Metacam. She became very ill very quickly. I came home from work that morning and couldn't find her. When I eventually found her under Ayanna's crib she looked like she was dying. SHe was lying in a pool of urine and there was vomit all over. I rushed her in and she was diagnosed with acute Gastritis and Pancreatitis. The Gastritis was so severe that she actually vomited up a piece of her stomach mucosa. Then she became septic. When Doug called to tell me I remember him saying "If ever there was a cat who could survive this it's Tori. I'm not willing to give up on her yet." So we fought and won. She was started on more antibiotics and improved quickly. Doug said that when she started giving him that "malignant look" of hers he knew she would be OK. She couldn't eat though so we opted for a feeding tube and that was the best thing we could have done. After a month she started eating on her own and the tube was removed. We did have to start insulin again though. At first we tried the Caninsulin because she had been on it before but then switched to Lantus and here we are.

Tori had another bad Pancreatitis attack 3 months later and was hospitalized again for about a week. At that point we knew we had to develop a plan so that she could be treated for CP flares a t home. Thank God for Jojo. Because of her I was able to ask Doug for what we needed and he was more than willing to go along with it after he did his own research. He even got a hold of Buprenex for us which is not readily available in Canada. He had to get permission to use it from the Emergency Drug Program and then get form MaGill University. Since then Tori has had about 3 CP flares which have been much less severe and we have been able to treat her at home.

The FDMB literally has saved my baby's life and I am so eternally grateful. I don't know what I would have done without Jojo and the rest of the Team. Tori is one of the kitties who probably will never go off insulin again. But that's OK. I get frustrated sometimes when she bounces all over the place but that is getting better as today shows. She's still with me and every day is a gift. I know I could have so easily lost her. She's my miracle feisty happy kitty I love more than the moon the stars and the sun. So that's our story. Congratulations if you managed to get through it all. I'm sorry I'm so long winded.

Barb, I just finished reading your story on Tori,
what a special little kitty she is and to have you and your family and your wonderful vet to give her more time to be with you, it's an amazing gift.

So can I have your vet's number? lol, you're very blessed to have him treat Tori!

I remember one of Tori's hospital stays, I was so scared for you both. But she's a trooper. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you Barb for Tori's story!

Funny how they pick us - loved how she crawled up all those stairs just to be yours :-D

She is surely a fighter.. and what a great bean in all of your love and care for her.. so blessed!

Your vet sounds like a definite keeper

OK so she's still "recovering" from her surfing Green last night. It's back to class you go Missy Kitty. Well will be able to get a real good night's sleep tonight. That's OK too. Those of you who know me know that I work permanent fulltime graveyard shift so any time I get to sleep in my own bed at night like a normal person is a real treat.
