10/09 Fistuk AMPS 326

Hi Shelly, how are you managing the 60 ml sub Q fluids a day? I think it is important to do if you can possibly manage it.
I’m glad he is eating better. What foods are you feeding him now?
You are doing a really good job looking after him.

Hi Bron. Thanks for checking in :)
Not sure if you meant managing in terms of what I do or how I work it so I'll answer both ;)

It's become more and more difficult every day since he's really resentful of the needle and the flow of fluids. But I don't let him off the hook bc I know how important it is.

i warm the water to about 33 degrees. i keep the 20G needle in the freezer. I offer him treats but he's not fooled anymore. He's not willing to take any food distraction while this is going on.

i use a 60ml syringe so it goes in fast. I tried holding him with a towel yesterday but I didn't do a good job. My husband noticed afterwards that the towel was wet which meant some of it went out. And it's hard to say how much.

I'm not giving up. I must find the right way for him. I'll try even smaller needles. I'll try putting him in a box. I'm looking for other solutions and perhaps a consultation with the guy I took the online course from.

What foods are you feeding him now?
Mostly Mac's or Premiere which is 3/5% and sometimes Lily's kitchen that's either 0% or close to, can't remember now.
As I mentioned before, Fistuk has never been a great etaer and I always had to chase him with a spoon (hes' teasing out my Jewish mum genes ;) ) So as long as he's happy to eat with a syringe for now I'm happy to do it so I can make sure he gets what he needs.

Cal work out as 250-270 per day on ave.

You are doing a really good job looking after him.
Thank you!! It's a labour of love. Not easy to see him hurt or sacred by needles, not easy to see him weak but I have faith in him and I keep on telling him he's a really brave boy xx

I'm blessed to be able to be at home and do some work from home so I can monitor him closely. It does take a toll financially and my husband is doing over time to compensate for that. But we're in it together to help Fistuk get to a better place. He's still young and I want him to be as happy as possible.

I. feel very supported here and that's a huge source of encouragement and confidence for me xx

BTW the Onda. Hasn't given him diarrhoea which is great news!
I gave him 1/4 tablet twice yesterday. Didn't see a reason to give him today. The vet suggested giving him 1/4 tablet 2-3 times a day only when needed and foe max 3 days afterwards I should call them if it doesn't seem to work.

Are you talking about ondansetron?
What is the strength of the tablet?
It can be given every 8 hours and can be given for much longer than 3 days,

Have you tried getting your husband to hold him while you give the subQ fluids?
YES. In fact without him around it was tough to do alone. He's really resisting so my husband needs to hold him strongly in place and then he tries to give him his favourite treat which he stopped taking during the SQ. At least he's willing to take it after as a reconciliation prize and it gets him out of anger quicker.

Yes
What is the strength of the tablet?
I think 4mg

I must tell you that I'm not a great fan of meds. I'm happy to give him when it's needed but I need to be sure it really is needed. if he's eating with enthusiasm just not by himself it tells me that he's being himself and not having nausea

The dose of 1/4 of a 4 mg tablet for 4.4 kg weight is correct.
I would recommend you continue with the ondansetron for a while longer as eating is so important in the full recovery of DKA and I am sure you don’t want him back in hospital.
I’m not a fan of medications either, but sometimes they are necessary.
I’m sorry you are having so much trouble with the subQ fluids. It must be hard for you.

Great news on the subq today. Well done.:)

Actually no, that's an under dose. The dose for ondansetron oral is 0.5-1.0 mg/kg every 6-8 hours. Fistuk, at 4.4 kg, should be getting at least 2 mg per dose and can go up to 4. Dosing for injectable is half that dose, sometimes vets tell you the same dose for the pills. Neko was sadly under dosed, before I knew better.

By the way, ondansetron can cause constipation, so should not be an issue for diarrhea.;) You do want to prevent nausea, not chase it, so I would only stop it when it's clear he's eating enthusiastically on his own.

OK good to know!
Do you think he's only syringe eating bc of nausea?

No diarrhoea is great but I don't want him to suffer constipation either. He actually delivered today quite a solid package...

Hi Shelly can I ask you why you keep the needle in the freezer?
I used to have to give Tyler's brother fluids and just left then out
@shellys
I've seen it recommended in several places, including a video I received from someone here. It seems to be less painful when it goes in, acting like anaesthesia.
You keep only a few needles in the freezer no longer than a few days (not the whole box). I keep 4-5 in the freezer at a time.

I never knew that but it makes sense :cat: Tyler's brother was so easy to give sub fluids to that he would purr lol. He was such a good boy.

My cat is dressed in pink tonight like yours. but I'll take the opportunity to give ourselves a break from the punctures

How is Fistuk going? You are being a good mother and he knows that you care for him a lot and want the best for him.
