Yesterday
Little Lulu was very settled this morning. No issues with BG testing, it turns out placing a warm sock on the inside of her ear was not the best approach. This bean is still learning and a little nervous when it comes to testing so was causing the poor girl additional discomfort. Thanks to the guidance of Serryn I now warm up the tip of her ear from the outside which Lulu doesn't seem to mind. Maybe she rewarded my improved technique with a nice blue number lol lets see what today holds.
Awh, I just read Lulu's story - she's so lucky to have you You two sound like a great team and are working things out...testing does get easier with time (unlike nail cutting...unless you have a secret on that one lol). Jax didn't care for the warm sock and I just give his ear a good scratch and rub before I get the testing supplies out. I also used a small flashlight when I first started so I can see the vein (I still hit it on occasion...). I'm also on team lancet device
Nice start. I hope Lulu will surf safely today. I found that a headlamp helps me to see the blood drop better on Furball's dark ear. It also comes in handy for testing if the power is out.
Looks like you are seeing the effects of those nice greens and the 18 hour cycles draining the depot. Hopefully she'll get back on track soon.
I used an old film canister or pill container with warm water inside, and held the ear against that. Smaller and quieter. And gave me a firm surface to poke against.
So Lulu was a cat today and decided not to bounce and to go swimming instead But given the depot draining misses and the 18 hr cycles she just had I’m thinking this might indicate she’s still getting too much insulin after the diet change. Thoughts please ...
The diet change should provide some changes to the numbers in the next couple days. It looks like you have been trying some different things like 18 hr cycles and maybe even shooting through a bounce? Have you decided whether TR or SLGS or something different? I imagine that tomorrow you may continue to see the effect of removing kibble. Is the goal to try to get to 12 hour cycles?
Yes we are trying to find a dose that’s safe to give 12 hourly, when we get there we will start following TR. She went up to 4U before Rita started fostering her, under vet advice - so way too quickly. We’ve had to reduce in leaps and bounds trying to get her back to a safe dose and took the opportunity of a NS two days ago to eliminate the dry food completely. Hence why her dosing has been so peculiar and the reductions so large.
Good to know that the elimination of the dry food may still have more effects to show @thebigfuzz thanks for the heads up on that. I had a bit of a plan in mind depending on her PS if we didn’t get advice in time (and I appreciate that providing advice in these circumstances is exceedingly difficult - who knows where her depot is at right now!) I will post what I was thinking now to allow for comment but I’m already thinking maybe I should be even more conservative with more effects from the dry food potentially still in play
Under 80 - NS
80 - 100 wavering between a NS or a token dose of .25U
100-150 token dose of .5U
150-200 wavering between 1U or 1.25U
Over 200 I was thinking 1.25U and make this her new dose until the numbers tell us otherwise
Shot time is in 1hr 45m
For any lurkers, lantus dosing is not based on preshot numbers. There is a specific set of circumstances happening here - do not copy.
Nice greens today - also still some 2.0-2.5 unit depot probably in play. Not sure why you'd bother with token doses, unless you've decided to follow SLGS. In which case the 1.25 unit dose is appropriate as her new dose. And you'd skip if under 90.
Her weight is about right. She’s going to get the test 10-15 mins early so we can decide. After this morning’s beautiful behaviour Lulu decided to be a bit tricky for testing again today
I’m just concerned that having not followed the TR dosing protocol on the way up and the dry food being gone now she might still too high so that it’s not appropriate to follow either protocol for reductions yet, i.e we need to be more conservative until we find the good dose.
ETA the lowest she’s shot so far was the 167 this morning
And yes spreadsheet is up to date - we’re in Australia so heading into the night rather than the day here
While I don’t dose advise, I would say SLGS is a more conservative route and may be a decent choice to find a starting dose, at least for a bit? As you know, you can always change the method. I won’t be up at shot time, unfortunately, but I know Lulu is in good hands.
It’s nice to see you after so many years @Vyktors Mum
+11.75 58 - we’re skipping for safety and trying 1.25 tomorrow morning. Sad to skip on such beautiful numbers but I can’t be sure her dose isn’t still too high from the vet and dry and Rita is still very new to this.
I think skipping was a good choice. They both need a break. Hopefully in the morning she'll get a number she can shoot and see how Lulu does on the new dose.

I was all ready for a big night but Lulu has other plans lol Will definitely enjoy a slow night. Thanks to everyone for all your support. The wealth of knowledge on this forum blows me away. X
