Ruby ate all of her food last night with the lysine and I watched her eat most of her breakfast so hopefully that will keep her sniffles at bay. The powder smells very fishy so I bet she likes that.

We have another blue start so hopefully she will see some green today.

Bama Kitty's vet usually prescribes Famciclovir in 50 mg. tablets. Instructions are to give 1/2 tablet every 8 hours for 5 days then twice daily for 10 days. He usually responds to it within 5 days. I have been known to dose him for 6 or 7 days and keep the rest for the next go around. Vet says it is viral. He first came down with it 2 years ago within a couple weeks of having been at the vet's office and receiving the FVRCP vaccine in his right shoulder which caused a giant [quarter-sized] scab to appear on his leg. Scared me to death when I found it. Apparently, he had a reaction to that vaccine which is supposed to protect against feline respiratory diseases such as viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia. So, naturally I wonder if the vaccine didn't start the whole problem. :(
That’s interesting. My cats haven’t had the FVRCP vaccines, at least not that I can remember. Ruby was just at the oncologist last week so it’s no wonder that she is sick. She also had an eye infection a few months ago so she has the herpes virus. My poor girl has been at the vet nearly every single month for the past six months so she’s been exposed to a lot of cooties. Good to know about famciclovir. I’ll ask for it next time she has a severe cold. I would try the Viralys powder and see if it works. Cats seem to take to the taste of it well.

Morning Katherine, I'm glad Ruby liked the lysine , I hope it helps her cold.
Remember when Tyler had an upper respiratory infection my vet also prescribed Famciclovir which worked great. His dose was 125 mg cut in half and give every 8 hours for 10 days , it's on his SS .He responded in about 4 or 5 days. Have a good day Katherine :cat: :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Good morning Katherine, sorry to hear Ruby has a cold. I treated Dolly for years with l-lysine powder for chronic eye herpes and moisturizing feline eye drops. Both Dolly and Funny Face had the FVRCP VACCINE. Maybe because they went to a cats only vet. I was going through our old bag of medicines both feline and human. As far as insulin, call me crazy back in the early days of this year. I found half a pen of Lantus I tossed because I dropped it. Two others 1/2 - 3/4 full that I stopped using because her numbers suddenly were off. The insulin expires in 2023. It hasn’t been refrigerated but it looks fine. I don’t even know what to say about this now :p Ruby’s numbers looks lovely the last several days, just one sneaky yellow. I hope Ruby gets over the sniffles quickly. Have a lovely day at work. Thinking of all of you :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for all of the good wishes @Ti-Mousse and Pepe @carfurby @Diane Tyler's Mom @Our Dolly Girl (GA). I have not heard Ruby sneezing or sniffling since I got home today so I take it she's on the mend. :)

I just bought the gel...why they would make maple flavor for cats I have NO idea! As expected, the girls turned up their noses lol! So why didn't I get the powder????:banghead:
I saw that maple was an option and I thought o_O:eek::nailbiting:. I did not look at the ingredients for the gel because Ruby's ok with mixing powders into her food but doesn't like anything smeared on her paw.

My cats don’t mind Viralys powder either. That’s the kind I use as well. Hope Ruby is all better soon. Don’t they bug you about getting vaccines for the girls when you take them to AMC?

They do not. There was that one rime that I boarded the cats when the exterminator was supposed to show up for the fleas and we were going to do the vaccination then but Ruby was sick then so it was never done.

Bama's vet blamed the herpes virus for his woes and he also had an eye infection at the same time as the sneezing and snorting. Wondering if anyone has tried sprinkling just some lysine powder from a capsule into the food rather than get a specific product for cats that I couldn't use if Bama didn't like it. Lysine may not be something you'd just want to sprinkle onto their food as it may not be a substance they can pee away if they get too much. Something to ask the vet about next time we speak.

Did you use l-lysine powder specifically for cats or just sprinkle some from a capsule onto her food. @Our Dolly Girl (GA) Sorry to hijack the thread.

Thanks, Adrienne
I am sending you pictures of Dolly’s RX and what I bought on Amazon. I made sure with the vet that it was the correct l-lysine. Good luck :):cat:

The only difference between the pure Lysine powder and the Viralys is the Viralys has meat, fish, and yeast added to make it more palatable for finicky palates and some preservatives. The pure Lysine is cheaper than the Viralys, and if your cat will eat the food with it then that's great!

Going to try it out--the powder that is. Hope Ruby feels better soon. Bama always gets these really wet sneezes--several in a row--and loud ones.

Thanks, Adrienne. Perfect. I like the Now brand. Have purchased several of their products and been very satisfied.
Hi Gina, Dolly was prescribed l-lysine for herpes in her eyes. The flare ups never stopped but the herpes virus never seems to go away forever. I get the cold sores, really bad years ago. I may have given it to Dolly, who knows. I hope not. Her eyes never seemed to bother her and it never got really yucky :p. I tasted every med I ever gave to Dolly before I gave it to her. I could not pill her so I had most of her meds compounded into a liquid. The l-lysine I don’t remember it having much of a taste. Our problem with sprinkling anything on her food was she never finished it and she ate differently each meal. Sometimes the top, sometimes around the edges. Again, good luck with Bama kitty. :):cat:

Ruby does too. She sneezes about 10 times in succession. It's really sweet and makes me sad to see.
Hi Katherine, sorry it’s so late. Just checking on Ruby. I hope her cold is getting better :(. I see she go a couple greens today, yay Ruby-doo :woot::woot: I hope you and the rest of the family are well. Hope you’ve finished unpacking :nailbiting: That’s never fun especially when you are working and have a sniffly kitty. Sending healing hugs your way. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
