Linda and Bear Man

This is my first post on the new board. So far, I don't love it. Bear is still doing poorly in terms of loose poo, urinating on the floor, and disorientation. His BG numbers are acceptable. I am attempting to post a link to a video showing his circling behaviour. (Does this need some special URL thingy)? He is searching for his litter box, which he eventually finds with assistance, but can only walk in circles (always right hand turns). He also does some back and forth eye scanning in the video. The mats on the floor are strategically placed for him to find the bathroom, and/or to pee on, but they are not working. One theory is that his disorientation is due to neurotoxicity from long term Baytril use. It is a long video, and I think it is pretty sad.

I always think of Bear Man, so thanks for posting and letting us know how he's doing. It looked like in the video that he did appreciate finding the litter box and jumped right in to use it. Maybe more litter boxes? I don't know, just a thought. I'm sure you already know the circling is not due to any inner ear problems.. Why did his eyes go back and forth, if he is blind?

Hoping and praying that his circling condition corrects itself or gets less and less.
(((hugs to you and Bear Man)))

hmmm. kind of reminds me of one of cindy's kitties. i think it was mousie. she had a video of it too, but the kitty's turns were tighter, maybe because she was in a smaller space. it had something to do with an ear issue. i'll send her a pm to ask her to have a look, maybe she can share mousie's video too and you can compare.

hey there, choy foong got hold of me. mousie did indeed do something very similar only yes, her spinning and walking was more out of control and she would actually fall over. if you want to see her videos, let me know and i'll get them for you.

the eye movement is called nystagmus.

mousie's turned out to be an ear infection and she had ear drops and if i remember correctly a pill for about a week. she actually had a large drop of goo or pus sitting on her eardrum and when the vet removed that, her balance got better. she's fine now.

i don't know much about Bear so can you tell me how old he is? i think they can do this kind of thing too if there's been a stroke or stuff of that nature.

edited: i just found his profile and scanned thru that so i see he's a slightly elderly gentleman with a lot of health conditions. i'm thinking it might not be an ear thing but i don't know. let me see what else i can find for you

Bear is 13 years old. He has a series of health issues, listed in his profile. The eye movement also involves a slight back and forth head movement. If it isn't too much trouble, I would be interested in your videos. I have been Googling "circling", and it looks like there are a lot of things that can cause it, including hyperthyroidism, which he has. I haven't wanted to pursue something like a neuro consult, because he has so many issues, and would there be anything realistically they could do for him, but I guess I should try and pursue the ear thing.

Linda, I don't know if I have ever asked this, but has Bear been tested for Toxoplasmosis? The circling, eye movements, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. are all symptoms of that too. So many cats have it, and a weakened immune system could have caused it to reactivate from a past infection, or it could be a new infection. Maybe wouldn't hurt to test and rule that out too.

Sending lots of positive vines and ((((hugs)))) to both of you.

linda, do you mean hard technology wise are hard on the heart. if the second, i know what you mean. some people say they still make them hurt to watch them. i just remind myself that she's wonderfully healthy and silly now.

if technology wise, i can try to find help for that 'cause i'm a technodumby

i don't have experience with many of these medical conditions, but i just wanted to stop by to say hi and lend some support.
positive thoughts coming your way.
(((hugs)))

No, I meant difficult to watch emotionally, to see her like that.

Hi,

I didn't watch your video, but the eye movement and the circles suggest the possibility of vestibular disease/vestibular syndrome (i.e., equilibrium/vertigo issue) to me. It has a lot of causes, but those symptoms suggest it's something to consider. A lot of times it's something that goes away and/or is readily treated.

My late cat Cleo suffered from it, and it was indeed heartbreaking to watch when she was in the throws of it. We never did figure out what caused it. Just learned how to help her ride it out when it happened. It usually lasted a few days and I just tried to keep her comfortable, make sure she stayed hydrated. It was hard for her to eat and especially to drink because she couldn't judge the top of the water and would dunk herself. Like I said, it was heartbreaking to see her like that.

Good luck with a diagnosis and get well to Bear!
