12/7 Olive OTJ trial Day 4 | Feline Diabetes Message Board - FDMB
Hi gang! So far so good. Spoke with Olive's vet yesterday and she's pleased as punch with how well Olive's been doing OTJ. She had me send in photos of the journal pages I've been making notes about everything in and after reviewing them and talking to me, The plan moving forward for the next week is to continue OTJ and instead of testing her 3 times a day as she's had me do for the last week, she wants me to only spot test once a day for this second trial week. Since Olive went off the juice, she's no longer as content to sit for the testing since she's been getting it so infrequently now and the doc wants to take as much stress off her and see if that helps her numbers even more. My eyes bugged out when she said to only test once a day now when I've known pretty much at all times of the day and night what her BG has been since August! She said it would not only do Olive good, but me too. She doesn't think she'll climb too high, but she said if the spot checks (at varying times of the day all week) reveal she's over the "acceptable limit" then to give the .06 of insulin. But for now, her numbers haven't climbed above 195 and then she dips to the mid 70's or low 80's for a low after she gets the Gluco Ensure. She only climbs at night when she's been sleeping for 4-5 hours on end which is another thing the vet isn't alarmed about as she said most cats do after resting for hours. For the time being, she said this just further intensifies her thoughts on Olive. Either she doesn't need to be on insulin because she's not truly diabetic, or she's simply not at that stage at this point in her life to be on insulin anymore and is now diet/herb controlled. And I have to agree with her in so many ways because Olive just seems happier off the insulin. She's so affectionate again and rubbing up against my legs at meal times. And get this...Olive is going the entire night without food! She has for the OTJ trial all this past week. Which means mom gets to sleep until 6am! AMAZING feeling, everyone. She's totally off the pepcid now and doing great too. Just to make sure you all knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, I asked for like the 4th time and had her confirm she knew I was using a human meter. Rest assured everyone...she KNOWS. lol. She said Olive's highest numbers aren't alarming at all and she was just so thrilled with how well she's doing OTJ. She said that I've not only made the right call in not giving insulin when she's hit the 195 (I waited it out to see if her numbers would drop, which they always have), but that it's exactly the right course of action for Olive since 4 hours later she has dipped into the 70's and all without insulin. She said to just imagine how far she would have dipped had I given the insulin. To give her insulin at this point would only cause harm. Her body simply doesn't do well on the lower numbers and she stands a greater chance of going into a diabetic coma from too much insulin. It's nice to see her bright eyed and happy again and eating normally! It's like we have our Olive back! One thing I had noticed during the time when she was stabilizing and her numbers were consistently into the greens and blues was that she actually smelled like insulin. You couldn't pet her without smelling it on your hands. It was overpowering and I wondered at the time why. Now I know. Her body was producing her own on top of what she was getting. It equaled too much for her. Hubby and I are just proud as can be that Olive has gone 6 days now OTJ and we pray it continues.
And this next part comes from the cooky and goofy mind of my husband and there's no need to go any further then what you'll read before you get the picture. lol. Imagine a thought bubble over Olive's head and this is what she's thinking as she enters the building of Kitty Anonymous ~AKA Insulin Anonymous: Hello. I'm Olive and I was an insulin addict. I'm 6 days dry now.
