Grace continues to do very well.

Her blood ketones, however, never disappeared, and hovered around 0.3 ... I asked Hollis how much she was feeding and how Grace was looking. I think she has been underfeeding out of fear that Grace will get heavy again. Grace is acting VERY hungry all the time, and has not put on any weight (she could use a little after the two DKA episodes!) I suspect the blood ketones are a by-product of weight loss/insufficient food, so I asked Hollis to increase her food.

The BBKs are staying around 0.1 since the food increase. Am hoping to see them vanish completely.

She is still showing signs of food allergies - scratching at her ears, pulling out her fur, etc. She is grain and beef free ... not sure what to eliminate next. But she is VERY active and happy, plays constantly and brings her mom a mouse (real) on a nearly daily basis.

Thanks again to all of you. :-D

Hi Karen
just a suggestion on the allergen thing, to rule out things at home, does Grace eat out of plastic dishes by any chance? We had some issues with that, so I now use PYREX glass dishes and stainless steel serving spoons. The reactions went away after that. Check that out next time you hear from Hollis.
Thank you for updating on Grace!

Hi Ronnie! I had the same thought and had her remove all plastic dishes a while back. She was feeding raw beef when the allergen was REALLY bad, and we removed all beef. Removed all grain too, of course, but that was because of the diabetes.

She now feeds raw lamb and turkey. I don't know if she still supplements with canned GO and EVO ...

This is fantastic news. What Grace put all of you thought. Hope Hollis resolves the feeding problem and the ketones disappear. Have a great day, thanks for the update.

I know this will be an off the wall question, but I'll ask anyway.

For years, Maui had the same symptoms as Grace. It wasn't until all the dry food was removed that it cleared up.

So, I have to ask, is there any chance that Grace is getting kibbles? Even treats like temptations and pounce can cause it.

Also is she feeding EVO or EVO 95%? There is a difference and the regular EVO has fruit and veggies, whereas the 95% doesn't.

If you say no to all this, then do the process of elimination, meaning tell her to remove one of the foods she is currently feeding for a week and see if that clears things up.

It's very possible that there is an ingredient in one (or all) of the foods that is causing it and while it may be ok for cats, it's not for Grace.

I am glad to hear that she is doing better!

Hillary, that's not off the wall at all. She gets dry EVO as a treat after pokies. The canned EVO is EVO 95%, but the GO! has fruits and veggies. That may have to be our next elimination.

Thanks.

So happy to hear Grace is still doing well! Great call on increasing the food intake!

I had to hunt for food allergies with Sasha, and did many food trials/elimination diets. I did a write-up in a condo the other day here that may be of help to you. Just remember when looking for a food allergy that it can be to anything - proteins are most commonly the problem and that includes any protein from beef to chicken to turkey to fish - just depends on what Grace's body has developed an allergy to. They can happen at any point in time and are common with repeated exposure. Food allergies can also be to grains, gluten, fruits, vegetables, thickeners like guar gum/carrageenan, dyes......many possibilities.

Rabbit and venison are often great choices for food trials if Grace has not eaten them before. Rabbit is supposed to be the most hypoallergenic of protein sources. Sasha always preferred rabbit over any of the venison we tried, particularly the Nature's Variety raw and canned and the Hare Today raw that I made. The EVO 95% venison is also a great choice as it is limited to just meat and supplements. I know quite a few people from the Yahoo IBD group that feed it regularly, but Sasha only made it about 2 months with it before tiring of it. She likes variety and that made it tough for us.

Is there any chance that it is an inhaled allergy? Those are actually more common than food allergies, although often when a kitty is allergic to one thing it is allergic to many things. Makes it very difficult and frustrating trying to locate the source of the problem.

Sending oodles of anti-itchy vines.

I'm an Evo fan and used to give dry evo here too - but that could be the culprit, the little bit she uses could be enough to keep prolonging the problems.

Tell her to stop feeding it completely and if she needs something dry and crunchy to use - use the freeze dried chicken instead.

I'd start first with removing evo dry and then the Go. It could be one, the other or both that are causing the problems.
