Yesterday's Condo

Well, Sami didn't make it to green last night, but she did surf the blues for most of the night. I took a +10.5 reading this morning and she was at 263. At the time she seemed like she really didn't feel all that well, but she was very cuddly. I sat down on the kitchen floor while the other cats had a quick snack before I took away the food and she just laid in my lap purring.

This morning she does seem like she is feeling better having dropped nearly 50 points from +10.5 to 216. I hope she is getting use to the low numbers and doesn't like being in the high ones any more. This AMPS is still higher than I would like to see her, but it is down from yesterday's so that is a start. With this jumping off point today I am hopeful that we will catch a little green in her cycle.

Hope everyone has a great day. I really should have gone back to bed after I gave Sami her shot, now I am really regretting it. It looks like I am going to need a lot of coffee today.

Re: 2/2 Sami AMPS 216

Hi Tina! "Sleep deprived" and "need more coffee" seem to be my middle names these days. I intend to take a long snooze after Mally and I get back from the vet today.

Sami looks like she's been having some really good days. No more of those red numbers she saw a little while back.

You're doing a great job with her and getting lots of tests in, which is excellent. I know all to well how important it is to get plenty of tests as it has saved Mally on more than one occasion.

Re: 2/2 Sami AMPS 216; +5 221

Thanks for the vote of encouragement, Ronnie and Chris.

I tried again today to do her shot before feeding her and it looks like things got a little wonky again today. So I think I will stick with test, feed, shoot. I hope she recovers this afternoon and heads back for the 100's.

Re: 2/2 Sami AMPS 216

As far as the shot goes, Jojo once told me "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I had tried a different spot once and it was a fur shot. Keep doing what's working

Come on Sami, let's see some more blue and green!

You got that right! At least I know that something like that really does affect her numbers. So I will keep it status quo, and hopefully she will show me some better numbers.

I am glad that we haven't seen any pink as a result of my experiments.

I almost didn't test Sami tonight, because I am trying to be less OCD on all the testing. At 9:00 pm, +3.5, I was getting ready to go to bed and wanted to make sure the cats all finished their dinner. I was going to try the twice a day feeding that has been suggested to me (off board) more than once. So I went around and tried to get everyone to finish their dinner. Sami just wanted to try everyone else's dinner, like usual, so it got a little crazy chasing her down to show her where her bowl was. Then when all that was done I decided to make some more cat popsicles and finally Sami decided to eat the rest of her dinner after it was put in the bowl that I was mixing the popsicles, crazy cat. And just when I was ready to head to bed I decided to take a quick reading even though it wasn't quite +4. And I got 66. WHAT! I thought that can't be right. She has been reading higher the last few days and we haven't seen any green since the dose decrease. So I tested again just to be sure, and got 69. So I knew it was right. At this point I didn't do anything I just thought now I can't really go to bed until I see that she is rising or at least a little stable. So I tested again 30 minutes later and she was at 60. Now I realize this isn't too low, but then I started to second guess the dose. I know I always check and recheck the dose, but I was flipping out because the numbers were not making sense to me. So I tried to tempt her with a little MC food, but she just wasn't having it. I don't know if she just didn't like that kind or that she just wasn't hungry. So instead of really flipping out I gave her just the smallest amount of HC food just to ease my mind. I will be testing again in a few minutes for her +5 reading.

Hi Tina,

I saw your post on ... now I don't remember... a newbie and it was re: food and meals and lantus.
Anyway... I wanted to draw your attention to Putty's food experiment - Ronnie/Luna and Jill/Alex also went through the same mini-meal experiment.... it works very very with Lantus.

Nice greenage today!

I am not sure I know of that experiement. Where can I find the information?

Hi Tina
Your turn for nice exitement.
Have a look at Ronnie/Luna's ss and I think all the "MM"s mean mini meals.
Samie is realy doing well, even with the chaos you have going on with all of the cats.
You have your hands full. Big tumbs up!

Hi Tina. You said: "I was going to try the twice a day feeding that has been suggested to me (off board) more than once. "

Most people find this is NOT the way to feed a diabetic kitty. Nothing is absolute, but in our experience, several smaller meals usually help the pancreas not become overwhelmed. The smaller meals trigger a response that the sputtering pancreas can handle easier. Even human diabetics are advised to eat 4-6 small meals a day - not just two larger meals.

In good conscience I would not recommend feeding a diabetic kitty just twice a day (unless there was some other compelling or unusual health issue for that cat.)

Regarding the feeding schedule - I'm lucky that all four of my cats are grazers. I fill four bowls in the morning with a can of FF in each bowl. They eat a little and then come back throughout the day for small meals. I fill the bowls again at dinner time and then once more before I go to bed. For the bedtime meal I don't put as much in the bowls as I do for breakfast and dinner, but I like to make sure there is food out in case Mally wants to eat during the night. They get fresh food in their bowls every eight hours and this works out well for us.

As for Sami's drop in numbers, maybe her new dose if finally settling in? I know I can't decipher the rhyme or reason behind some of the numbers these cats come up with, but it's very possible that's part of their master plan - to keep us on our toes.

I hope you get some sleep tonight!
