Hello all,

I have a question. Considering that Mowgli's numbers have yet to budge and we are at 4 units: Would it be advisable for me to speak to our vet about switching to Levemir? So far Mowgli's not showing signs of the Lantus stinging him, but I would like to get ahead of that potentially happening in case he ends up needing high doses long term. Secondary benefit could be that his body might react better to Levemir...

If not advisable now, at what dose would you begin to consider the side effects of high Lantus doses?

I can't advise about Levemir, just wanted to say don't give up hope.
Buddy's numbers looked very similar until we got to 4.25 units. That's when I saw the first blue. I hope Mowgli starts responding for you soon!

That's a good question. Usually we like to give the current insulin 6 months before switching to something else, just to give it enough time to see whether the insulin is working for the kitty or not. But as you noted, Lantus can sting, so perhaps that ends up being a contributing factor in switching sooner. I'd give it a little longer though, you've only been using Lantus for 1 month :)

It's ECID, or each cat is different on when or if they feel the Lantus sting. We've seen it at 1.5 units and up past 6 to 10. I supposed you could talk to your vet to see what their thoughts are if you should find yourself in the position of wanting to switch. I've seen some vets be really opposed to it, so it would be good to see what their reaction is in advance. You don't want to be in the position of seeing the sting and having to wait to find the right vet to get a prescription. Poor Katy is like that with Mo now. He needs an insulin change but she's having to fight to get it.
