Yesterday's thread http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5281

Started canned food last night, Fancy Feast gluten free varieties, and picked up some freeze dried treats. Gave Joe and his non-diabetic brother each 1/2 can last night and they both cleaned their plates. Left a little dry food and it was gone this morning. Gave each a full can this morning and both cleaned their plates again. Getting them to eat it won't be a problem, just need to figure out how much to give them.

Joe has a vet visit today at noon. I suspect she's going to suggest a doseage increase.

---Update---
281 at the vet. Just saw the tech for a quick blood test and the vet is supposed to call me next week about running a curve at the office. I asked if I could run it at home and the tech said theirs is more accurate but she did write it on the chart to include in the report to the Dr. Hopefully I'll have enough data by the time she calls to convince her that the office curve isn't needed.

Re: 2/6 Joe AMPS 367 - Vet today

When you're at the vet, perhaps ask what Joe's ideal weight should be. On Dr. Lisa's website on feline nutrition, there's a section on feline obesity and she gives a means of determining how many calories per day your cat will need. Janet and Binky's food charts include information on calories. That will give you a sense of how much your cat should eat.

However, until Joe is regulated, he's going to be hungry -- a lot of the time. It's fine to feed more right now. Diabetes is a "starving" disease. It's why so may cats lose weight prior to diagnosis. Diabetes prevents glucose from entering the cells so our cats don't make use of the calories their consuming. As they get better regulated, this situation improves.

Hi Mel,

Welcome to lantus land! also the land of pokefest and OTJ parties!

People have heard me say this millions of times, but I'll say it again... if you can... pitch the dry food. It will only give you grey hair; and we would rather you stay youthful!

You've already been directed to the stickies at the top of the page, so I don't need to elaborate on those... in one of the stickies, there is mention of a 'hypo kit'. I wish this kit could be renamed the 'Superman kit". All you need, in addition to test strips, is a couple (ok, more like several) cans of high carb food (HC) like 18% or so. Fancy feast of the grilled variety are good choices, but others are also available... pretty much anything with gravy. I mark my cans with a sharpie pen as to not use them by mistake.

Also... one last note from me today.... I'm not surprised by your vet's response w.r.t. the curve.... my opinion is that curves at the vet are - hmmmm less than desirable (being PC here). The kitties are usually stressed and their BG is higher than it would be at home even if you poke Joe 24 hours a day -> and that's NOT what I'm suggesting, it's just an illustration. To go back to the vet's response, they will rarely (or never) say that you have enough data... just because it isn't theirs.

Have a nice evening and see you around.
