Looks like the increase is on. I think we will go for it tonight. Mum has church tomorrow, she gives a couple of people a lift so she really doesn't want to let them down by not going but he usually takes about 3 cycles to respond and if it comes down to it she can take him to church and leave him in the car in his carrier for mid service testing so she'll be right!

Vyktor says thank you for his 3 year OTJ annifursary congrats from Voula, Carla, Dyana, Sienne (I can't believe it's been three years either!), Mary (tofurkey fud fights was de great way to celebrate!), Amy, Marilyn, Bron, Laura, Michelle, Ella (Rusty dat cimmamum cake dat you made - mmm mmm, de catnip icing goes so nice wif de gum leaf hooch!), Tricia, Ann, Wendy, Rhiannon, Ruth (I'm a gemini so it's perfectly normal for me to have multiple personality ;)) and Chris.

Bit of Australiana for you - It's ANZAC day today. Very special day for us here as we remember the Gallipoli landing (100th anniversary this year) where so many Australian and New Zealand troops were slaughtered. We mark the occasion with a public holiday, dawn services in parks across the country, military parades and by wearing red poppies. This year I have a friend in Gallipoli marking the occasion there which will be just amazing. He was lucky enough to get a ticket in the ballot.

LEST WE FORGET

Thank you for the bit of Australian history today, I'll take some time to look up more information when I get a chance tonight. I take it there is a lottery for tickets to go to Gallipoli to take part in special memorial services?

Also: My imagination got ahead of my reading comprehension and I pictured your mom taking Purrdy in the carrier into church tomorrow. I thought "Gee, my mom never let me take MY cat to church when I was little, what a laid back church!" Thanks for the inadvertent chuckle.

Sorry to miss his anniversary yesterday, but happy 3 years OTJ to Vyktor! What a wonderful thing to celebrate!

Good luck with the dosecrease! and oh.. Im a gemini too, so I totally get the multiple personality thing:joyful: Hope your ANZAC day was good..interesting bit of info on the Australian history.

Good luck with the dosecrease! I hope Purrdy sticks to his predictable timing so Mom can relax at church.

Our poppy day is November 11th, must be an autumn thing. I too remember the movie Gallipoli, it stuck with me a long time.:(

We have rememberance day (with poppies) on 11 November too - I wonder if they have the same day in the US and if it's an allies thing? ANZAC day used to just have badges but the poppies have snuck in for this too. 25th of April is the actual date of the Gallipoli landing. It is a lottery for the service in Turkey these days as there are too many that want to attend - especially this year being the 100th anniversary. The dawn services all over the country are also very well attended. They well expecting 50-60 thousand at Perth's main service in Kings Park this morning but smaller services and marches are also held all across the suburbs.

We have Veteran's Day on November 11th to honor all those who have served, and are serving, in the military. I'm not sure about poppies.

@Patricia & Noodle you are a wealth of information this morning :) do you guys have some other sort of symbol? Here the sales of poppies and badges raise money for the veterans.

I've just noticed that Google is also noting ANZAC day and my friend just sent me a pic from Gallipoli. Still dark there but sooooooo many people packed in

Serryn, you used to see veterans selling poppies outside grocery stores and malls all over the place the week before Veteran's Day, but in recent years I haven't seen them. Too bad - I always liked buying my poppy and wearing it proudly. Too many traditions like that seem to have fallen by the wayside in the States. The younger generation doesn't have the same respect for the past that ours did.

Good luck with the dose increase. He's really dipping his toes in green more often these days.

What a wonderful way to remember those who sacrificed so much for your country. Your friend is very lucky to get to go to Gallipoli. I suppose you've seen the ads for Russell Crowe's new movie about being the father of three sons who were killed at Gallipoli and he goes there to find their bodies? It looks amazing and a tear jerker.

If your mom ever wants the zeros gone from the SS, let me know. I know the trick ;)

Okay Purrdy, work that juice, but not before mum comes home from church!!! :D You're too funny, a Gemini indeed!

I also remember the movie Gallipoli :(:( I see that in Honolulu, HI(DH's hometown), they have a ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific every April 25th. Attendees are given small sprigs of rosemary to signify remembrance and commemoration. Rosemary has particular significance on ANZAC Day, as it is found growing wild on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

My father was in the navy and 2 uncles were in the army (in France) in World War I. My parents often talked about Armistice Day and how joyful the celebration in NY City was. For years (into the 1970s, I believe) we wore poppies on Nov. 11th and also on Memorial Day in May, but that seems to be a thing of the past. Too bad. I'm glad that the traditions of remembrance of that awful war are kept alive in Australia & New Zealand, and also in Canada. The movie "Gallipoli" is very powerful.

So Purrdy gets to sit outside the church. St. Francis would have welcomed him inside!

Have a good weekend, Serryn,

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Aha, Purrdy. Working it, aren't you. Good!

And I'm with Ella. St. Francis would be fine with a cat in church. I suspect Pope Francis would be, too. 'Course it might depend on whether the cat was fine with being there!

Thanks for the history information. Think I'll spend some time with the Google today to learn more.

Interesting that the poppies used to be more prominent in the US. Living in DC (and growing up the granddaughter of some very proud veterans), I notice the American flag seems to be used more often than anything else for occasions like that. The Old Guard (an Army Regiment) places flags at every gravestone at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, but not Veterans Day.

The reference to St. Francis made me smile--one of my favorite days in (Catholic) elementary school was his feast day, when we could bring our cat to school to be blessed by the priest in a big ceremony! I was mostly just excited to see all the animals
