Hello everyone :)

Fistuk's surgery went very well! That vet is a super vet!!! They took such good care of him. She told me when I came to pick him up that it was an emotional one for all of them.

He was in bad shape when I brought him over. It took them half a day to stabilise him. She said he was either to euthanise him or take the risk with the operation, knowing he might not pull through.

I knew that Fistuk was suffering; I didn't know how much. In any case, for me it wasn't a question, I knew that once they'd take out the teeth he'd be much better.

They extracted the two canine teeth successfully. In the head CT she could see three roots residue from the previous operation that where left. She said that if he was a healthy cat she would have taken another half an hour to dig them out but in his state she decided not to.

He woke up from sedation quite quickly and gave them his 'I'm happy to be alive dance'. It's very touching. I've seen him doing it when he wakes up from anaesthesia. It's like he's happy to discover that he's still alive and he literally dances.

He couldn't wait to get back home and was meowing almost all the way then later tried to open the crate's door. I haven't seen Fistuk with so much energy for months!!!!

At home, he ate a lot. Very happily. I gave him portions of 10g at a time so it's not too much on the body after all the sedative drugs.

It looked like it was difficult for him to rest his head and relax into sleep so I gave him the pain killers we've received for him.

Meds: * painkillers Metamizol (every 8 hours as needed)
*Antibiotics (Synulox 50mg (twice a day for 30 days)
*Metacam per 2kg (morning for 10 days)

His blood values are actually quite good. Besides the WBC that was in a range beyond the range and T4 which was too low. These should settle after he recovers. I'll add the blood values in the lab tab today.

Dose: last night I still gave him 1/2 the dose - 0.4U, but this morning he got his full dose.
I was in two minds about it because the last thing I need right now is HG on top of everything else...

I took a day off, and I'm notiroing him closely. If I feel like he's nearing a HG I'll give him an unearned drop less (though for me he earns everything he gets ;))

The vet said that she wouldn't be surprised if he goes into remission. She's had two diabetic cats and one of the nurses has a diabetic cat and she said she knows how challenging it is for the human managing the condition. It's nice for a change to be appreciated and acknowledged by a vet, rather than...

He hasn't yet went to the toilet, either pee or poo. I wrote to the vet.

She recommended I continue with SQ daily for the time being.

On the whole, it really feels like we have a new cat. Fistuk hasn't been so bright, alert and interested in food for such a long time.

For the next week, there will always be someone at home with him, either me or DH.

Thank you all for your encouragement, prayers, healing vines and pawsitive support. It has been a life line for me yesterday!

What a lovely update, Shelly!! :bighug: It's really warming my heart to hear how well Fistuk is doing and how much energy he has. Especially after the scary two options the vet had given earlier, these results are further proof on our strong our little ones can be. And how cute that he has a little "back to life" dance!!
So so happy for you both! Hope the recovery continues to go well and those numbers stay green :cat:

Glad to hear Fistuk's surgery went well and that he's recovering well from it! :-)

You want to recheck the dosages of the painkillers and antibiotics. I have had more than one experience of vets prescribing dog dosages for cats! Especially with Meloxicam, that seems to be a common issue in the US leading to it it having a black box warning in North America.

Thanks, Briana :)

I agree. Our little ones can be very strong. In fact, with a WBC of 100 he's nothing BUT strong. I did agree with her that Fistuk was on the edge, tipping towards the end. I also believed that the surgery will be the solution.

Had we had the money we would have done it in January. It's deeply saddening that often these are the choices we need to make. And I'm very aware that I'm blessed to be able to not make that choice and that he survived these three months.

He's not sunbathing on the balcony and life seems as if no drama took over out life for a few months :p
Wishing you a great day :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks, Bhooma :)

And thanks for making that note. Luckily, I don't have to worry about it because this vet is a cat only vet :cat::cat::cat: She's had a cat-only clinic for the past ten years and is treating only cats, mainly because of this problem. She's aware of the huge differences between dogs and cats. It was extremely important for me when it came to sedatives for the surgery.
I'm happy to hear they took action about it in another America. It can be a devastating meistake.

Hi Christine :) So good to hear from you! :cat:
Happy you're visiting here and getting the good news with the drama news together :p
Thanks for keeping us in your prayers. I hope that you're not keeping yourself too busy and that the pack are ok :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Fistuk ate all day really nicely. I gave him a painkiller @+9. It's every 8 hours so I thought I'll start him on a cycle so pain doesn't settle and I need to chase it.

But supper he hardly touched. He was very interested but after a lick or two he turned his head. He looks in pain.
He was happy to be syringe fed and showed interest but I gave him only half the portion.

I have some Ondansetron. It doesn't look like he has nausea - but will it help with eating better?

Vet said not to worry about poo or pee that it might take another day. He shows interest in the toilet but after a sniff he goes straight back out.

Any ideas/advice ?

False alarm. He's back to eating.
Looks like only pain and after he rested he finished his supper

Hi Shelly, I’m so thrilled to hear Fistuk is doing well!! He looks so relaxed in the photo. He’s think he’s so happy to be back home with his Mum!
You’ve done a wonderful job getting him that right care so he can
Feel much better!
Ivy and I send lots of love and oysters to you for a quick recovery and an easy time getting back to feeling his happy and sweet self!

Hope you all get some much needed rest :bighug::cat::kiss::bighug::cat::kiss:

Hi Shelly, I've heard you refer to Fistuk as a fighter and that is so true! Already eating and dancing straight after such a big op... what an amazing little cat he is. Hope you are both recovering nicely today, and that he continues to keep fighting all the way to remission. :bighug:

I'm super happy to read this report today and also that he is eating again. Anaesthesia impacts on the GI system can last a little while, so it could have been that today that slowed him for a while.

Awww this is such a great update! So glad to hear Fistuk is doing so well and that he already feels so much better, even while recovering from surgery (that says a lot)!

Love the pic of him so cozy and relaxed in his bed. :) :bighug:

Shelly, this is a wonderful report on Fistuk's condition! I SO hope you can get him into remission after all of this. And I hope he continues healing well and soon.
Thanks, Marielle :)
Yes, that would be a dream but I'm also trying not to hang up on it too much.
I'm happy the vet said that his kidneys are actually in a good shape. I'm taking the wins that are already present :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for your kind words, Hellen.
True, he is a fighter and we've seen it with him since he was a kitten. He was very sick at 6 weeks old and he knew how to make his way to find us so he's arranged his gurdian angles for this life time :joyful:

I'm actually in a lot of pain, still. But I've decided to stop with the painkillers. It messed up my gut flora completely. The scar is healing slowly and I hope that in the new few days it'll stop hurting so much. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Ohhhhh don't say oysters!!¨Did you say oysters ??:joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful: Gosh I love oysters so much. If you tell me they're good for healing after surgery I run down to town where there's an oysters restaurant :p

Thank you for your kind words, Staci. I'll hope over to your side soon and check if there's an update from your vet visit.

Lots of love to you and Ivy :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Shelly, it is such a great update! I am so happy for you and Fistuk. I find his photo very nice, he looks relaxed and happy. He must be feeling better already!
:bighug::bighug::bighug:
Hi Cecile:)
Yes, he's feeling better with each day.
We're enjoying a lovely spring sun on the balcony. I hope you have this nice sun in France :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks, Wendy :)
It's a good reminder .... I was more worried about the pee but he peed last night. So there's more GI movement.
I'll give him SQ today and hopefully it'll help him poop poop hooray too :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Just catching up on this fabulous update! Don't know how I missed it! So happy everything went well. :bighug::bighug::cat::bighug: The acknowledgment of the caregivers challenge is huge, they sound like a great vet!!
