Good early morning (for those of you on the Eastern tine zone). A quick question for the group regarding your nights:

how do you handle checking your kitties BG at night? Do you get up throughout the night to check at specific times, or do it before bedtime and again, upon waking, thereby leaving the 6-8 hours in between unchecked?

and if the latter, how do you know if your kitty is experiencing a crash in the middle of the night? This is the hardest part for me. Between my wife and me we have plenty of coverage during the day as she is retired and I work from home but nighttime is rough. I have been checking before bed at ten, then getting up at 2 am and again at 5 am to check… if that’s what it takes then it is what it is but I was just wondering if sleep deprivation was just part of the deal for the caregiver. Any alternatives y’all have come across?
We use the libre 2 sensor which has an alarm so it’ll go off if her BG goes below 90, which it almost never does, but still. I find myself needing to get up and check anyway.

Are you leaving food out at night?
Over time you will get to know if Oregano is one to drop low easily or one who just goes down slowly.
Sheba used to love to drop low and I always got up at night and tested her. I was chronically sleep deprived.
If you are feeding the same food during the night as you do during the day, you should have some idea how the cycles will go.
Do you have an auto timed feeder?
When are your shot times? As the nadir us usually around +6, once you see the BGs rising again after that, you should be pretty safe especially if you give a snack.
Maybe you could just get up once at night and see how that goes.

thank you for the reply. I really appreciate it.

I do leave food out for her at night. Shot times are at 930 am and pm, so if nadir is plus 6 we’d be looking at 330 ish. I get up at two to check on her but could push that to three then again at six or seven. Even that would be an improvement. Chronic sleep deprivation is real with this, to be sure.

Hi Wade, if you are planning on continuing to use a Libre sensor, I highly recommend switching to a Libre 3.
It’s smaller than the 2. And I find the biggest benefit is that I don’t have to manually scan the sensor.

So multiple times throughout the night I am in the habit of waking up and just look at my phone and I can see where Ivy’s glucose level is since her sensor takes her reading on her phone, which sends it to my phone.
Even if we are not in the same room, my phone is next to me and all I have to do is look at my phone,
I don’t have to get out of bed.
I don’t have to bother her, so it’s much much easier and I’m able to fall back asleep after just looking at my phone.
So think about it, there’s really no downside to switching to the Libre 3 in my opinion.

The only thing is, you would need a phone dedicated to Oregano that you would leave at home and near her.
You don’t need service on the phone, so you’re not paying a monthly fee. All you’re doing is downloading the Libre 3 app and the LibreLink Up app and that’s how the data get sent to your phone.
I hope this helps.

yes this sounds like a good call. Is there an alarm with the libre 3 that you can set to go off if the BG drops below a certain amt? Without that I don’t think I could go to sleep.

Yes there is! Mine goes off a lot when Ivy drops lower.

I have Kobe's test/ feeding/ shot time around 5:10 am and pm. It is a little insane, but I could delay his shot or get a +2 in the morning before I left for work if I had to. The early time also let me get a +4 or +5 before going to bed at a decent hour. If I had to stay up a little longer and get a +6 or +7 I could. Other times I went to bed early (AAAHHH!) and set an alarm for +9 or +10. I could get an evening +2 whenever I wanted because it was only 7:15 pm.

I didn't usually stay up AND set an alarm unless it felt like s**t was going left. I would rotate.

Sometimes I just went to bed when his curve had been pretty consistent.

I tested more when he started "chasing the surf" (dipping down into blues or greens from yellow and pink) or if I was increasing his dose.

I can confirm this. Kobe had the Freestyle Libre 3. He took over my new phone which just sat next to the couch where he sat, and I put my SIM card back into my old phone which did not support the app.

This definitely helps and I am going to be looking into this sensor 3. Thank you very much.
