Charlie is still doing great. No vomiting and eating well. We've been seeing a lot more lower numbers and bounces haven't been lasting as long. I hope it keeps up.

I got a text from the vet this morning..... "Charlie's Spec fPL test was normal with a reading of 1.9ug/l with 0-4.4 ug/l being the normal range. I didn't get a chance to write up his chart until today and couldn't remember if we had talked about doing a nutritional supplement survey when we talked about his dietary needs? Please let me know if you want me to send you the survey. I noted our discussion about diet and that you were going to do some research on your own. Let me know what you ended up doing with that. Lastly, I think we discussed dental care given his diabetes and his need for a dental cleaning but couldn't remember for sure so wanted to mention it. Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything further from me."

I was so convinced his Pancreas was giving us problems but it seems that's not the case. Could it be considered mild pancreatitis since the number isn't 0? My thought is that since he has been acting well and we are seeing lower numbers, I should hold off on any additional testing. That would help my bank account as well since the Spec FPL was $200.

I will be switching him from Friskies Pate to Weruva BFF Pate. They are still low carb but have about half of the fat content.

I may be a bad cat mom but I've really never done anything for Charlie's teeth. I wanted to know your thoughts on that. When we were there she did say there was some plaque buildup and areas that looked a little inflamed. I hate paying and taking him to the vet so if there are ways to help him at home let me know. If the vet dental cleaning is the best option I will do it.

The test for pancreatitis will only be above normal if there’s an active episode with many cats. Some with chronic pancreatitis like Max had always showed it was elevated even without symptoms. I’m not sure it’s close to 100% accurate when elevated. I think if negative it’s likely not pancreatitis though. It’s good Charlie’s was negative.

I'm glad it was negative too! But now I have no idea why he has had these flare-ups of getting sick and losing appetite. Maybe it's just higher BG and ketones. He hasn't been sick for a couple of weeks so I am hoping it doesn't happen again. But now I've probably jinxed it! *knocks on wood*

Inflammation or infection due to needing a dental is probably the number 1 reason people have a hard time regulating their cats, and also that cats in remission fall out of remission. Areas that are red in the mouth may mean more than just a cleaning is needed. You might want to read this page on tooth resorption on the Cornell U website. I'm not saying Charlie has that, but that's it's very common in older cats. Their page on feline dental disease talks about other conditions too, and what you can to at home to help.

Wow! Good to know, Wendy! Sounds like Charlie's mouth needs some help. Maybe that is causing our problems!! He could be getting sick and losing appetite due to pain in his mouth maybe?! I'm going to schedule a dental cleaning and exam right away!

I want to kick the several other vets who never said anything about his mouth or even looked at his teeth.
