Hi everyone! Sending love to all and scratches to the fur babies. Tiny Solé seems to be doing well...I'll be testing her BGs tomorrow, but her BGs have been steady in the high 70s to high 80s, so she seems to be holding her own! We are coming up on six months next week since she's been OTJ! Yay! However, I've noticed something odd, but can't say that it's a new development, or something that has been happening prior to her FDM diagnosis, or at least may have been there since diagnosed...I think we have just been watching her more closely, so maybe see more? Any way, she's had a limp since pre-diagnosed of FDM, right front leg/paw, but what I've just realized is that the bend of her right front paw is off from her left front paw, which appears normal. The bend seems to be further back from the other normal-looking paw. Other than the limp, she seems fine...happy (as happy as Tiny gets! LOL), calm (which she never was prior to her diagnoses) and I have no idea how long she was diabetic before being diagnosed, so who knows how she's been affected. No walking on rear haunches, or other visible gait issues. She seems ok otherwise! So, any other kitties have this issue? What's the speculation... Diabetic neuropathy? Some other nerve issue? Carpal hyper extension? She limps, but jumps up on things ok - she has always landed with a thud when jumping down. ...she has always been missing that graceful cat jumping gene! She does seem to be favoring it, but no obvious swelling. Thoughts? XOXO Thanks!
Mowgli has the same thing in both of his front paws... at first I thought it was neuropathy but now I am more convinced that it is carpal hyper extension. It isn't fully diagnosed though and my vet didn't seem concerned about it
Hi Joanne! And congratulations on the 6 month OTJ Anniversary! Hmm with the limping. If it was for just a short amount t of time, I’d say maybe a strained paw. Bubba has had that a few times but it resolves in just a few days. It might be worth pointing out to her vet. Since she is approaching the 6 month marker, a vet visit soon would be a good idea and some new blood work. Maybe the vet could shed some light about the limp. Some practices will have a bet that specializes in orthopedic.
Hi Bobbie! Love to Bubba, mom, you and DH. I hope you got my condolences on Forest. ❤ You are such a good cat mom. Has Bubba adjusted yet? Thanks for the suggestion. I'll make an appointment with the vet for a checkup and some bloodwork. Another specialist?! Oh! https://images.app.goo.gl/hjbNQEBwqaParnaZ8
I’m actually not sure how long he’s had it, he was living with my mom across the country when he was diagnosed so he could have been this way for a while before he moved out with me. He definitely didn’t have it two summers ago so I’d say it’s been about 0.5-1 year. Mowgli doesn’t seem to notice it, he has a pretty cute strut from it though. You can see what I mean in a pic I put in a post about it here it’s most noticeable on his left paw (right side of pic) is that what Tiny Sole’s paws are like?
Yes! That's it! An elongated "bend at the wrist." She does favor it a bit, but is mobile without any impedance. I'll get her looked at and report back to the hive! ❤
Yes please! I haven’t had a vet notice it as anything yet, but it’s clearly not normal. It looks just like pics of carpal hyperextension I’ve seen online... I find there are more examples of dogs though. I would really appreciate hearing what your vet has to say. Online it basically says that for carpal hyperextension they can fuse the bones together but most ppl suggest leaving it if it doesn’t bother the cat. You can also get braces on amazon if it does seem to start bothering her.
Yes, that would be my inclination. You are kidding, right?! I'll keep you posted. Send me a PM on it so I can update you!
