Yesterday on The Chronicles of Ruby-doo. :cat:

Ruby threw up at 5 AM, mostly food. DBF found some vomit earlier in the week but it was hard to know which cat was the culprit, but I have a feeling it was Ruby. I will start Cerenia again with her. We haven't seen many greens and a few too many yellows for my comfort. Will increase to 1.25 tonight if we don't get any numbers below 100 this cycle.

Have a beautiful Sunday, everyone. :bighug:

I emptied out the litter box pee drawer and saw some drops of pink looking urine. I have a feeling it's Ruby as I've seen her licking her bottom a lot recently and I know UTIs are a side effect of pred though it can also help with the pain and inflammation. Sigh. Going out to get some urine dipsticks and D-Mannose. I noticed the strong urine smell a few days ago and a few of you noted it could be a UTI. Question: Can I wait until Tuesday to have the oncologist look at her or should I bring her to an emergency vet today?

Hi! Poor Ruby girl!! I would call your internal med vet or regular vet tomorrow morning and get her in tomorrow for a urinalysis. If you've got a clean container you can take some urine in tomorrow morning for them to look at, but if you're going to culture it she will need to have a cysto in the vet's office. Yes, the strong urine smell is also an indicator of infection. I don't know that an oncologist is going to deal with a UTI and this way, by Tuesday you'll already have had a vet look under the microscope for bacteria and have sent it away for culture if it looks suspicious.

If she starts to tank in terms of behaviour today, I would go to emergency vet. Whisper was notorious for giving me no warning between manageable UTI and "I need a vet NOW".

Sadly between my work and DBF's, we can't take her to the vet tomorrow, so it's either the ER vet today or we wait until Tuesday. I was planning to do bloodwork with the oncologist on Tuesday anyway, and oncologists are also internal medicine specialists, so she should be able to manage it. Aside from the vomiting episode this morning, Ruby is eating well and going back and forth between the two floors of the house so she seems fine.

May I ask @Margaret (and Pearl) what the warning signs are that I should look for? I noticed she's been licking herself down there and a strong urine smell but otherwise what else?

Gotcha!

I would look for fever (hot to the touch or by taking temp), lethargy, moaning and groaning, not moving, and not able to lift herself into the cat box, dehydration, or increase in the symptoms you’ve already noticed.

Are you able to do sub q at home a little? That could help flush her system out until Tuesday.

Also could you drop off a urine sample tomorrow? Not sure if that’s too much to do but could be a start if you’re able. I’m glad to hear oncologist will be able to tackle it all what a blessing!!

Hugs !!

Hi Katherine, sorry to hear Ruby might have a UTI, but I'm glad to hear she's eating well and roaming around the house.
Hang in there Tuesday is almost here. Ruby needs to catch a break , poor baby
I hope the D- Mannose helps for now ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

She doesn't feel warmer than usual and I don't have a rectal thermometer. She's not at all lethargic, quite the opposite, and her appetite is good. Ruby won't let me do subQ, have to get the local vet tech to help me with that. I did get D-Mannose powder and will give her ¼ teaspoon 4x a day to see if that helps while we wait for the doctor's visit on Tuesday. I mixed it into her raw turkey with lots of water and she licked the bowl, so it must taste good. :p

If you can start D-Mannose today you should be okay to wait until Tuesday. Furball got antibiotics for a UTI one time and it did not clear it up. D-Mannose cleared it up and I didn't have to take her back to the vet. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
Glad to hear that it worked well for Furball. Ruby's never had a UTI before and I worry about it given her CKD and the effect of the pred on her kidneys. I definitely do not want it to become a full fledged kidney infection. Paws crossed. :)

I tested Ruby's pee this evening with a UTI kit after I caught her coming out of the litterbox, and it was positive for leukocytes but negative for nitrile, so there might be an infection. She's still eating and being lovey, but she was looking a little lethargic this afternoon and her numbers show it. Hopefully the D-mannose I've given her today will start to take effect. I really want to avoid another vet visit if I can wait until Tuesday.
