Good morning,

today Binie is bouncing from a nice cycle last night. She started to go down early and at +3 we already had blue and green at +4. This time I did not feed anything high carb but offered low carb food to her. That was enough and she didn't go too low. 78 was the lowest on the libre and I managed to poke her and it was 98 on the Accu Check. I was a bit surprised she was shooting up after hitting the lowest point without having had any high carb food. I hoped she would stay longer time in blue or dark green. But altogether I am quite grateful for this cycle because I thought the dose is no longer good for her.

I already wrote an e-mail to her vet. I don't know if Binie has side-effects from the antibiotics. She is licking more than ever and cleaning herself (including the wound) like crazy. I looked it up and found on one page that Cleorobe can make the skin itchy. I delayed giving it for an hour now but if my vet is not responding in the next 30 minutes, I will give her the next dose and hope it will be alright. Each day is full of decisions... :banghead:

Hope everyone is having a calm sunday! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Update: Our vet, who I can't thank enough to answer my e-mails on early sunday morning, advised me to give the Cleorobe another try for two, three rounds to see if the licking behaviour continues. If we have to stop it, the next step would be steroids, which is the option I always wanted to avoid. Today I have to try to give Binie a bath which is something we never did before. Unfortunately she can not clean her private parts anymore as she likes to do, which is not nice for her with diarrhea going on. Poor girl... Getting old is not always fun for cats too. :(

Hi Heike :)
I'm sorry to hear Binie is suffering so much. I help that the antibiotics will help and that you don't have to resort to steroids.

Are you giving Binie any probiotics? Or saccharomyces boulardii?
I remember when Fistuk had diarrhoea. He responds very very badly to AB and I had to bath clean him a few times a day. He was so miserable it broke my heart. But I could not let him walk around with such mucky butt.
Today he sometimes have a mushy top at the end of his poo which leaves him just a bit mucky. I clean him lightly with a cotton wet with lukewarm water. That works better. He protests but not much.

You're right, every day is full of significant decisions to make. You're doing such an amazing job taking care of Binie.
I wish you an easy and restful Sunday :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Good day, Heike and Binie. Great job handling that overnight cycle last night. I hope you were able to get some sleep. And I’m glad she didn’t go too low and you were able to manage it with low carbs. It does look like she’s bouncing from those lows last night:cool::D

I’m sorry she’s reacting to the antibiotic and itching as well. It sounds like you’re on top of it and hope the itching and licking will come to an end quickly.

Good luck with the bath if you haven’t already done it. I know I used a warm washcloth as Shelly suggested, also. I’ve never actually put Ivy in a tub and completely washed her, as I don’t think that would end well. I think I would be mauled:blackeye:

I hope you and Binie will have some time to relax today and it will be a calm day. Sending you hugs from me and Ivy :bighug::kiss::bighug:

Hi Shelly,

thank you for taking care! :bighug::bighug::bighug: Yes, I started probiotics with the antibiotics together. And I still give healing earth which also helps with diarrhea but I will switch to psyllium, as I just read that healing earth is not recommended for cats with kidney problems. I think the diarrhea is uncomfortable for her but not too bad as she is not loosing much water. But there are four more days to go, so we'll see if it works.

Thank you for mentioning saccaromyces boulardii. I haven't heard about it before but I googled it and it sounds like something worse having in stock.

It helps me to know, that Fistuk also sometimes needs help with cleaning. I wondered if it is normal that Binie is not able to clean herself. But maybe it's difficult with all that fur. I also tried with water and a washcloth but seems like we need a few more rounds to soak it. She is not fond of the procedure but it seems she knows, that I want to help.

I hope you have a calm sunday evening with Fistuk, his brother and your family! Take care! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Staci, yes, I was a little proud I stayed cool last night and didn't overfeed her. Some things definitely get easier. And I took a nap today so it was o.k. to stay up a little longer.

I gave up the idea to bath Binie and also use the washcloth method. In the morning I filled an unused cat litter box with lukewarm water and puttet it outside on the terrasse. I thought maybe her intuition tells her to go inside to soak her butt. But her intuition just told her that she has a very big drinking bowl now and when I looked outside she was drinking from it. So I stayed with the washcloth method and to my surprise she lets me do it - but never long enough.

I also hope that her skin issues resolve. All of this is still quite a mistery. We never found out to 100 % where the wound, which was cared for in the surgery, came from. My vet was very surprised about what she took out during the surgery and said she never saw something like that before. Now it is bothering Binie again and maybe the threads are the problem but I wonder if something else is going on. The wound looks pretty much like before the surgery. But after all I am grateful that she seems not to suffer too much but feels comfortable most of the time.

I hope you can go out today without any worries and the time is much more enjoyable than expected. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Heike , I'm sorry Binie is having a reaction to the antibiotics.
Poor girl, she's been through so much. She's such a good girl
You're such a great mom !
I hope the bathing goes well. I hope you both have a better night :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you so much Diane! Yes, Binie in not having the best year of her life but I am grateful, that she seems to be much more comfortable than directly after the surgery. I already wrote it to Staci: I gave up my bathing plans and try to help her with a washcloth. I hope Tyler is well, I remember he also had to deal with diarrhea lately.

I hope you have a calm and relaxed evening Diane! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

So glad you could at least bathe Binie a little bit, Heike. I can’t imagine putting a cat in a bath and not getting scratched by them. (At least not my cat).
That’s a great story that she drank from your intended bathtub. Silly girl

Good job last night with not over feeding her.
It seems it’s always an experiment to see what will work.

I wish her wound would heal already and you could be past all of this aggravation. Poor girl.
You’re lucky she seems to still be pretty happy, despite it.

Last year Ivy broke her leg and had to have surgery then heal from that. It was months of healing and keeping her in a very small room with no furniture so no way she could jump or hurt herself.
I wasn’t used to sleeping away from her ever. We both had to get used to that. (She’s never actually come back to our bedroom to sleep since then).
So I understand how you are feeling when you’re watching and not sure how it’s all going to turn out.
I had the hardest time keeping Ivy from licking her incision site. It was months I had to keep a cone on her and she hated it. But there was no other way or it could get infected and then we would have another set of problems I couldn’t handle. It was truly awful.
(I cried a lot).

I’m sorry you’re both going through all of this and I pray she gets past this whole thing soon.
You’re doing such a great job being her Mum. She’s so lucky to have you in her side.

I hope you have a very restful night :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Staci,

thank you so much for your kind support! :bighug::bighug::bighug: Your story about how you handeld Ivys broken leg really touched my heart. I can imagine, it was so hard to keep her in one room and let her wear a cone. You must have felt her spot in bed terribly empty. Thank god, for Ivy, this tough time was a bridge to better health. And even though it was tough, it seems quite clear, that it was necessary and a good decision for her wellbeing.

My vet also mentioned the cone as an option besides the steroids. I don't like both of them but at the moment, I would rather choose the steroids, even though they will mess up the tiny progress we made with regulating her bg. After the surgery, wearing the cone for almost two weeks and the brief stay in the clinic, Binie was really not herself anymore. Even my vet said, that she thinks Binie has a depression. So I try anything, she is not coming into a situation like that anymore.

I will grab another straw now and try a homeopathic medicine I found today. It is called "Syzygium Jambolanum" and besides helping the pancreas to produce insulin it is supposed to help with itchyness of the skin. I will order it tomorrow and hopefully we can start in the evening. And so far I still give the antibiotic. Maybe one of the two are working until thursday. If not, I will decide with my vet what to do. I know she honestly loves cats and she knows Binie very well.

I hope you can enjoy the unexpected free time today and you have a peaceful night Staci! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Heike, I hope you know that I wasn’t trying to suggest that you use the cone on Binie.
I know that’s not going to work for her based on what you’ve told me in the past. I know it made her too sad and I think their emotional situation is equally important.

I know you’re making all the right decisions for her and I’m definitely not questioning anything you’re doing. In case for some reason my comment made you feel that I was suggesting that, I was not.

I just wanted to let you know that :bighug:

Hope you are having a good rest tonight :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Heike, I’m so sorry you are going thru so much lately. I too have to clean Tiger up after he pees. He is getting his foot and sometimes his leg wet. I use a wet cloth also. Not fun but we lov our babies…
I hope you and Bonnie have a peaceful night and some of this starts to get better….hugs

Good morning Staci, you are such a sensitive and kind person and I know, you would never force your opinion on anyone! What you could read between the lines was more myself, not being 100 % sure, if it's not a mistake to not consider the cone. Last time we have been at the vet, she was whispering in Binies ears as a threat: "Cone or steroids - cone or steroids - stopp licking Binie!" :)

Hope you have a beautiful day! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you so much for sharing your experience Deb! It make me feel a bit more normal next time I am helping Binie to clean. I hope things get a more calm and normal for you and Tiger as well and you have a peaceful day! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Here is another thought, what if you put the cone on backwards? Would it cover the area she’s licking??
So the cone would not be facing the front of her face but facing her back end. It could sit flat against her body?
Does that make sense?
Just a thought. :bighug:

Oh Staci, that is a perfect idea! Binie is sleeping now but I will try that later. I don't know if it works with her front legs, because they have to be covered. The biggest wound is directly in her armpit. Thank you! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope it helps! I saw someone suggested that once and I thought it was smart. It was to cover a Libre!
Let me know if it works. Paws crossed :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Staci,

we gave it a try today. She is giving me her: "Mommy, what did you do????-look. :) For a minute I thought it is the perfect solution but then she tried to take it off with her paw going under it and I was scared she would fall from the couch doing that. But maybe I can alter something to make it fit better. I will keep you updated!
