? 7/6 Taz, Blood Glucose and Sedation

I'll update my post with numbers and my prior thread once I get home. We've been with Taz at the vet's since just before 7am and it's currently 1:30pm. We have a 2 hour drive home.

Taz had to have an ultrasound on his pancreas for a mass that has grown since January. Our vet felt there was a good chance it was cancer and wanted us to go to a specialist to get a better look. The radiologist felt that it was a pseudocysts, aspirated it, and drained it. We're having the fluid biopsied and will have results in a few days.

Taz's glucose was 221 at 8:30, then they fed him at 9:15 and gave him a half dose of insulin right afterward. After he had his ultrasound, they tested him again at 12:00 (2.5 hours after insulin) and he was at 75. They used our meter and strips to test him both times. We just took his reading again before leaving at 1:00, and he was at 204. That's a really big drop and climb in a short space of time. Is it possible that he bounced so much because of the sedation? He was in the 70s during his last cycle, but he only got a half dose today and still went that low.

I am so glad it is done. I hope by draining it he will feel somewhat better. I do know that the anesthesia can lower bg so def keep an eye on him. Lm skipped 3 shots in a row when he had his dental.

As for the half dose remember he still has a depot running on full doses so it's not surprising he is still getting down there.

The severe drop and rise so fast I can't claim to understand.

If that cyst was causing pain his bg may be lower now overall as well if the pain is less or eliminated.

Paws crossed for those biopsy results being just a cyst.

Was it just sedation or anaesthesia? Neko never had BG impacts due to sedation, which she sometimes needed or she'd be "feisty" for echocardiograms. Not all anaesthesia induction drugs lower the BG's, and one of the newer ones doesn't. Some cats BG drops at the vet's, my girl being one of those. Though the 75 looks a little out of place, wonder if they didn't get a big enough blood drop.

He ate really good when we got home but he's hesitant with his preshot meal, so I'm only giving him a half of dose tonight too (do I jump back in at his normal dose...2.75 units... tomorrow morning?). He dropped down to 145, so I'm afraid it might be an active cycle. I am sooo tired...I slept about 3.5 hours last night and maybe 4 hours the night before. The thought of having to stay up all night is not sounding appealing. I think he's hurting, so I'm going to give him some gabapentin in a bit.

He was only lightly sedated. They said he's a really sweet boy and doesn't give them any trouble. I think they sedated him for his comfort.

The ultrasound showed he had several cysts (he had 3 in January), but the radiologist was only concerned about the large one. We have to watch it because now that it's an empty pocket, it can fill back up. The ultrasound also showed his pancreas was darker than it showed be, which shows that he has inflammation, so were dealing with pancreatitis. I've started him on NHV's Turmeric, so I'm hoping it will help some.

Has he had pancreatitis before? I can’t recall. Did they give you something fir nausea like cerenia or my fave ondansetron? What about buprenorphine for pain. Has you looked at the articles in the pancreatitis handbook?

Yes, back to the normal dose in the morning. I hope the drained cyst stats gone.
