Saturday's BGs: AMPS 253 / +3.25 151 / PMPS 192 / +3.5 165
Yesterday's BGs: AMPS 223 / PMPS 136 / +1.75 104 / +3.5 101

We were gone most of the day yesterday and couldn't test but she's been higher lately anyway so we increased this morning to 2.75. We had a chat about her unpredictable pancreas :(

Jill also had been diagnosed with eosinophilic granuloma a few years back - she had a sore on her tongue which for a long time we thought was cancer, but after way outliving her prognosis -- and after a second opinion, it was determined to be eosinophilic granuloma. She used to pick at her skin a lot, but omega 3 every day has helped that so much. But then lately I've been noticing some skin growths and she's been at the vet twice in the past week or so to see about them. A couple got scabby and broke open. She got convenia for that which seems to be helping them heal. The other the vet is concerned about and we are going to have it removed on the 27th. I wonder if any of this can affect her BGs?

Good question, Jill. Susie has had the convenia injections before and they also seemed to work well for her. I can't remember if this antibiotic raises the BG. As far as the skin problems go I would think any infection would cause the glucose to go up but I don't know if the growths would be considered an infection. What did the vet call the skin growths? Are they also the eosinophilic granuloma like she had on her tongue?

The vet said the crusty ones are probably eosinophilic granulomas. She thought if they started to heal with the convenia that they probably are. The other one isn't crusty but it's raised - this is the one she wants to remove and biopsy.

Photo of suspicious growth that will be removed. Looks like a crab!

Convenia is not used for EGC. My Mocha has it. It’s either a reaction to a protein or something in the environment. My internist had me switch to a novel protein, one she had never eaten before and feed only that for at least a couple months. Mocha is currently eating venison. It should go away on its own. Can you take a picture? Mocha had them on her lips but they can appear anywhere. It would not effect her bg unless infected. Mocha’s never scabbed. They would appear and then go away. It started when she was just about 9 months to a year I think.

I just saw the pictures after I posted. The smaller one looks like she scratched it. Neither look like Mocha’s. It looks like maybe dermatitis that she scratched. Mocha has had that on her ears and related to EGC.

The vet gave her convenia in case there was an infection because of the crusty and bloodiness of these sores. She said convenia works well with skin issues? And didn't want to give any steroids, which is what she usually would think of to treat skin issues, especially if they are allergy related. Is she wrong? Hang on and I'll post a pic of what the lesion on her tongue looked like back when she got misdiagnosed.

Here are a few pics over the years. I noticed recently that her tongue looks a lot better. Much smoother. Maybe the insulin helps ;)

Your pictures are definitely EGC. Was a switch to a novel protein ever suggested as tried?
Convenia is used for skin infections but what makes her think there’s an infection?

Look how gorgeous your baby is!!

I wish you had diagnosed Jill before she went through a year of chemo :)

I think we talked about novel protein, but she USED to be a bit of picky eater so we didn't try. Her tongue never seemed to be bother her really so the vet felt we didn't have to make any major changes 9at the time) if she was still eating and drinking well. She will eat anything now. She thinks the lancet caps are kibble and if I'm not careful, she tries to eat those.

The vet was concerned that there could be an infection, so I think the convenia was preventative mostly. One of the boo-boos was pretty bad, the skin opened up a little and she was worried about that one. They look better today.

I have 2 other cats who get puffy lips and tongues and they are on novel proteins that really helps. But one of them likes to lick everything and often gets herself into trouble.

Oh, the vet did mention dermatitis. I'm not sure if she scratched it or not - she had another on her hip that kind of crusted over and then the crust fell off and it was a little bloody. Her skin is a mess :(

Google sure helps. I diagnosed Max with fd and Mocha with EGC. My vet didn’t want to give steroids or potentially dangerous drugs to a cat this young so we took the slow approach and huge anti jinx it’s working. She will be 4 in October so too young for all this. She is a beautiful cat and so is Jill.

Mocha is eating Primal frozen venison. To avoid intestinal issues once they were close to a year I was feeding raw chicken, beef, turkey, pork and turkey. I later tried rabbit but it was too low in calories so switched to duck. That was high fat so switched again. I may have ruined all those proteins for her but there’s a chance she can eat rabbit and duck if venison fails.

Since Jill is enjoying her food maybe try a novel protein?

I’m by no means a vet but that looks like some type of allergy as opposed to something requiring a biopsy. If just one or two bumps I might think differently. Have you considered a dermatologist?
I could take her to a derm but probably would have to wait 4-5 months to get an appointment anywhere. I'm not too worried about these things unless they continue. She seems to have had a little spurt of them, so unless they continue, we will probably not change her diet. I have 3-5 foods I feed her depending on BGs so I would hate to have to limit that.

The one that's going to be biopsied is the one that's not scabby, but looks like a crab, or a rorschach test. It's raised and I think getting a little more raised since I found it a month or two ago.

I feed raw. You can add honey or karo to make the food higher carb. You just need to look for single protein foods. You might very well find different carb levels. I know it’s not easy. :bighug: Food intolerances are tough.

I have a 2 cats on rabbit and pea and one (Bowie) who should be on novel proteins but he's such a picky eater we aren't sure it will last.
What do you think about prescription vs single protein canned food that's not prescription? Bowie likes variety.

I personally don’t like the RX foods unless all else fails. Have you looked at Susan Thixton’s food lists? It includes what she would feed her dogs and cats and she expects a lot. She puts one out every year. Unfortunately she removed Primal from her list which is what I feed Mocha. She won’t say why.
