should the feral make it inside after spaying - does anyone have any hints on how to train a cat to use the KL?

Try not to use litter that is scented and so strong it turns cats off. That scent is for us humans, but cats hate it. If you use clumping, may even work for clay, add some Cat Attract. I believe Dr. Elsey is the one that puts it out there.

I keep all new cats in a small room (bathroom). They've always naturally used the litter box when confined - haven't had any issues.

confinement in one room to start, but most cats will just use the kitty litter without issue. It is ingrained in instinct to bury waste to keep the predators from smelling their scent. If there are issues, you might try mixing garden dirt or sand with the litter to start with... (Only if there are problems) and gradually lessen the amount of dirt/sand.
