? Azithromycin with Sucrose... safe to give?

Hi everyone,

New diabetic mom here with a quick question. Daisy's Vet prescribed her Azithromycin for a chronic URI problem she's been having. I picked it up from the pharmacy, just got home and realized it's the children's one, which is Cream Caramel Flavoured. Dose is prescribed is 1.5 ml once a day for 7 days. She has the 200mg/5 ml bottle.



Is this okay to give? I'm quite annoyed now because I'm guessing the answer is no, the pharmacy understandably won't take this back and I'm out $50.

Also wanted to say thank you to @Critter Mom for your help on my previous post. Trying to figure out how to make my spreadsheet public, then I'll head over to the Lantus board for help with dosing.

To set spreadsheet sharing permissions:

* At the top right of the spreadsheet screen click on 'Share'.

* In the pop-up dialog box click on the 'Get Link' section.

* Change link access from 'Restricted' to 'Anyone with the link' and make sure that the permission on the right hand side is set to 'Viewer'.

* Click on 'Copy Link' to copy the link text to your clipboard..

* Click 'Done' to save the changes.

* Edit your FDMB Signature.

* Type in a label for the link, e.g. 'Tibbles' Spreadsheet'.

* Click and drag your mouse over the label text to highlight it.

* Click on the 'Link' icon (paperclip) at the top of the signature box.

* Paste your spreadsheet link from the clipboard to the URL field, then click 'Insert Link'.

* The link label should now appear in blue text. Save the changes to your signature.


I'm sorry but I don't know the answer to your azythromycin question.

I would take the bottle back to the pharmacy and tell them Daisy is a diabetic and can’t have a medication with sugar in it.
Have you opened the bottle?
Surely the vet would have mentioned no sugar in the medication.

 

If it has been reconstituted they they will very likely not take it back.
The sucrose will raise BG/increase insulin needs. Sucrose has 3.9 calories/gram. so the 1/5 ml wouod be 27 calories. So for average cat that wouod result in about 10% of calories from carbs just for the antibiotic. If diet was 10% carbs before it wouod not be about20% from carbs.
It is up to you if you want to use pills instead.
