Mochi & Me

Member Since 2017
I just got home from picking up an appetite stimulant from the Vet's office for Mochi. Just from reading the box, I'm not sure I want to give it to him:

"Elura may increase serum glucose for several hours after dosing. Use in cats with current or historical diabetes mellitus has not been evaluated and use may not be appropriate"

Does anyone have any experience with this drug?

I've seen a couple people use the drug here, with varying results. I personally would never have used it because it is contraindicated in cats with acromegaly. It stimulated production of growth hormone, and the tumour that causes acromegaly does that already. It's that extra growth hormone that in turn causes the diabetes.

From what I've read, it's been specifically approved for management of weight loss in cats with CKD. From this FDA article:
Elura may increase blood sugar levels for several hours after a dose, so it may not be appropriate to use in cats that currently have diabetes mellitus or have had diabetes in the past. The drug should not be used in cats with a condition called acromegaly, in which the pituitary gland in the brain produces too much growth hormone.

I will probably call my vet tomorrow and ask him about it. Let him know that I don't feel comfortable using it. Besides, Mochi is horrible at taking liquid meds.

Update: I talked to the vet and I will be returning the Elura when I pick up his B12 sometime early next week. We're trying cyproheptadine this weekend since I have it here, and if that doesn't work we'll switch to mirtazapine.
