My cat Powder was diagnosed in August and is on Lantus his dose currently is s0.25. He lost 50% of his tiny 8 lbs before diagnosed. He is a smaller breed type of a Persian and 8 lbs was a good weight for him.He was never overweight.Since just before he was dx I started feeding him wet food planning to get him off dry (Core) after reading Dr. Lisa's info about cat diet and dry food. I guess I should have realized something was up because he was eating it. He rarely ate it when I fed it as a treat daily for all the kitties.
While I do feed him all he will eat his weight gain is slow. He usually has food left over.I have recently tried feeding him higher fat foods in the low carb area (below 5). I really want him to gain back the weight he is still bony and has only gained back 1 1/2 lbs. While he is not regulated he has been doing better with all the help we get.
I know it is not at all recommended but I am wondering about feeding him high carb kibble which would help him gain weight even if it meant more insulin. He does not have any renal problems and drinks water. He does love dry and although he's not getting any he still goes to where his bowl was asking for it. He currently eats between 6-10 oz of canned a day, usually 8.
I would appreciate your thoughts and ideas especially about leaving dry out for him. I forgot to mention he is a typical picky Persian  and what he wolfs down today he can turn his nose up at a couple of days later  Thanks

If he is continuing to gain weight I would just leave things alone. You do not really want to gain weight that fast. I would try to avoid the dry since it makes BG control harder. Are you testing his BG at home? It really helps in getting the cat "regulated".

I have moved all of my babies off dry in the past few months since my sweet Payne was DX . Since she
is still on pred. I have NO trouble getting her to eat but I have one hold-out sorta. I have three semi-ferals
that live in my office/patio area of our house, my sweetest girl ever, Miss Kerry wants her dry back!
But dry is poison, and there are so many other real foods.

I have tried everything but have found she actually likes raw food, especially turkey meat and chicken.
I add water and slurry it up, she cannot resist usually ..... it is trying to look at food differently and
trying to re-create the mouse and bird the best we can. (new business ...freeze dried mouse, yum!)
although my garage cat Molly (lives in the garage because she DOES NOT play well with others!) brought
me a bird the other day ..... laid it at my feet, and then it flew away :) I am top cat!

Good luck and think outside the box! during the change-over I kept telling them all (10 cats) I have
more ideas than you have reasons to not like, so get on board! Since we ditched the dry EVERYONE has
more energy and coats are shiny. Keep trying he is gorgeous!
Nancy and Payne (trying to figure out how to get to the top of the Christmas tree  )

Thanks for your input. We are daily posters in LL and to Powder's chagrin I am a fairly avid tester. Not as much as some but more than enough from his point of view  You can access his spread sheet from the link in our signature. Powder is only eating wet food and has been since September. He is gaining weight very slowly and I think only one pound since September is a little meager imho.

I don't want to feed dry either and the dry I fed was 11% carb with no grains. I do want his weight up. Knowing that this illness can cause other problems he will have a better chance if he is fit and can fight better. ;-)
