Yesterday we rushed Arthur to the ER after his vomit was pink and foamy at 2pm and then turned dark brown at 3pm. He got blood work done, fluids, an X-ray, urine ketone test, and and an anti-nausea injection. He was dxed with a UTI and given an antibiotic injection. No other findings. I was giving an anti-nausea for car rides and 2 other meds. They essentially said it looked like blood, but they don't know why it happened. Once Arthur came home really late at night the other cat vomited up a brown sludge that smelled strongly of just the wet food. Why am I upset? - The office told us they'd call us when he was ready multiple times throughout the day. I was bawling my eyes out scared for my cat. Then super late they finally call upset we haven't picked him up when nobody called us. - They didn't feed him. They didn't give him his insulin. I wanted to do a glucose curve today, but Arthur has peed himself out of fear and stress twice in the last 24 hrs that I'm letting him rest and hoping he will clean himself up. He's extremely stressed and scared. Has anyone noticed anything wrong with FF Chicken Classic Pate? Since both cats vomited
I had issues with several cases of FF Turkey and Giblets. The cans didn’t seem tightly sealed- the tops were not concave as usual and made a popping noise when I pushed them. I contacted Purina and they told me not to feed the food “if I didn’t feel comfortable”. I continued to press the issue and they had me send several cans back so they could “evaluate”. I had to constantly call to follow up, and they eventually told me the cans were not normal and should not be fed. I asked if the actual food was tested because I was concerned it was a bigger issue, and they said no, the food was not tested, but the cans shouldn’t be that way. They sent me $100 worth of coupons and that was the end of it. My cat no longer eats FF, but that’s also because I needed a low carb and lower phosphorus food. It could be coincidental with your cats getting sick after the food, but maybe not. Did the cans appear normal? Did the food smell normal? Lots of cats here eat FF, so if there is a widespread problem, I think we’d hear from other members. Curious if anyone else has had issues? Hope your kitties are feeling better.
I saw some concerning threads on Reddit about FF causing vomiting and hospitalizations but it's so hard to tell if it's coincidence. I'm wanting to find similar food as a backup in a prince range because of those stories, but I don't want to fearmonger. It's just scary.
It is scary, and I know there are a ton of anecdotal stories online, and it can be hard to know what to do. We just have to be cautious, and I always go with my gut feeling. Again, the way I looked at it was that there are so many people in this group feeding their kitties FF. I think if there is a problem with the food overall, people here will start posting about it. I will say, there are times when it seems like all my kitties throw up and I wonder if a can of food was “off” in some way. I don’t know. It can be difficult at times to make cause and result connections.
I have had issues over the years with FF pates as well. Definitely have gotten some smelly cans Most recently my girl stopped eating the turkey and giblets so I switched to chopped grill about 4/5 months ago. As of this week she is now turning her nose up at the chopped grill. I feel like they know. I also find a difference in the food that comes from chewy as compared to PetSmart and sometimes the same food has more juice than others. it’s very frustrating and this week was tough for me to get her to eat.
Hi Lisa do you find the food difference is better coming from Chewy or is better coming from Pet Smart? Thank You
I used to think pet smart but juts picked up a few cans and maybe not. Sorry for the delayed response
Can you get any mid-cycle tests? It looks like he needs a dose increase but his spreadsheet is so blank except for the reshot tests for the most part. We would need to know his nadirs to know of this is a good dose or not enough insulin. How is Arthur doing otherwise?
I was just about to make a new post. Spreadsheet has been updated and we are doing a test at +3 and +6 tonight. Both myself and my partner have unmedicated ADHD which has led to a few missed shots. In addition to this I'm at work 9.5 hrs a day and have a 1.5 hr commute, so I've been having a hard time getting mid cycle tests in when I work during the entire AM cycle and then by +3 I'm typically asleep. I'm staying up a little later tonight to get a +3 test and my partner is setting an alarm to get a test at +6. I know that we will continue to get more consistent with testing and figuring out what's wrong. I think I just need to commit and set alarms to do mid-cycle or full BG cycles on my WFH day and weekend. Arthur's energy levels seem to be improving, and I'm getting much better at testing his BG! I'm getting better, and Arthur has figured out the routine. He knows he gets a small treat after his BG test, so he hangs out by our little kit/station. We had a really funny situation today where my partner forgot to put the lid on the cotton balls and Arthur was crying next to his little sugar kit and pulling out cotton balls and throwing them on the floor lol
Arthur has also lost 2 lbs which is in line with what the vet wanted him to lose. I'm a little upset that nobody told me he was overweight until he was dxed with DM. I didn't know as he is a very fuzzy long-haired cat. This was after reducing his twice daily meal size from 2 cans of FF to 1.5 cans. I'm still not sure if that's exactly right, but we are weighing him and trying to monitor. I'm really hoping it's not due to his DM.
Arthur got a green. 97 at T+3. I know I'm supposed to be happy, but I'm scared. Partner will be doing a T+6 test. I'm wondering what # would necessitates a T+9 test. I'm nervous.
Have been ordering from Chewy only now. Sir Maximus needs some special food low in Phosphorus and they seem to have the best price. Thank you for your response back and hope your kitty is doing well....
Oh, I didn't see this question before. 97 is a very safe number (and I was really pleased with that cycle as I said on your new thread). Just give a small LC snack. Naturally, you can always retest in 30 minutes or half an hour if you are nervous.
