Good Day,

I'm here for my lovely Sgt. Pepper 11. 5 years old was diagnosed with diabetes as of 12/09 from his senior blood workup that was taken this past Saturday 12/07. We have a follow-up appointment scheduled this Friday to review the medicine he will be on, they believe it's type 2 diabetes based on his age along with the signs.

He lost about 5-6 pounds from earlier this year, when he weighed 15-16 pounds, and now weighs 11.6 pounds. He does have a very healthy appetite, drinks lots of water, and uses his litter box a lot. Earlier this year Sgt. Pepper was mostly a dry food eater only which was Tiki Cat High Protein Dry food & then one day he started eating wet food. Currently, he eats Friskies Shreds in Gravy which he loves, he also will tolerate pates like Ziwi & Tiki Cat.

Our vet wants to give him medicine in a liquid form that can be added to his food which will help with his diabetes (I don't remember the name of the medicine, but I do remember that it's a newer medicine); his vet feels this medicine will help control his diabetes without having to go on insulin (hopefully).

I am here to learn how to make my soul cat Sgt Pepper have a comfortable life after being diagnosed with diabetes.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I am going to send you some information about the new oral medications for diabetic cats.
Please read it all carefully as there are several contraindications for giving a kitty this drug.
Did Sgt Pepper have any ketones at diagnosis?
We have seen a few bad outcomes from cats being given one of these new oral medications and personally I would not recommend using them. I would not use them on one of my cats. But it is up to you.
A diabetic cats can be treated very successfully with insulin and lead a normal life.
NEW TREATMENTS FOR DIABETIC CATS

No signs of Ketones at diagnosis, vet is testing on 12/21 which will be 8 days on the medicine to see if any Ketones. I found an amazing group of individuals who have their precious babies on this medicine and have recommended me to go pick up Ketostix to check his urine for any amounts. Today would be day 4 on the medicine, so we will get that here soon to check to ensure no ketones.

Testing for ketones is a very good idea when using the oral meds. Please also be sure that there's no indication of your kitty having a urinary tract infection.

I am glad the group has suggested getting some Ketostix and testing for ketones. Did they suggest doing it daily. I wouldn’t wait until 8 days to test for ketones.
