Hi All,
I'm very very new here. My cat, Meeps, was diagnosed on Thursday 3/18, and the vet told us to give 3 units 2x a day.
That was his dosing administered Friday and this morning.
My cat has seemed very sleepy and seems to be walking slowly and honestly looked better before he started the insulin. We called the vet today and they said to just do 2units twice a day instead.
They didn't really give any information about at home testing and wanted us to do a glucose curve in 3 weeks at the vet.

After spending a few hours reading in here today I decided we needed to test him at home.
We have a human glucose monitor and his number was 194 pre food.

So does that mean we don't need to give him the insulin tonight after dinner?

That is a huge starting dose of Lantus. Most start on no more than 1.0. I am glad you are testing him at home. That’s a safe number to shoot but I would not shoot 2.0. We need to get you set up with a spreadsheet and signature. We ask new people to start on the main health forum to get set up and then move here.

What food are you feeding? All wet or raw or are you feeding dry? How much does yiur cat weigh? This all matters in determining a starting dose.
 
Thank you! I’ll look into the main forum. I downloaded the spreadsheet, I’m gonna learn more about that but I put his first entry in tonight.

He’s been on a wet can food diet for a few years. Currently a prescription RC one for sensitive tummy.
He’s currently 13lbs but he’s a larger breed- Maine coon mix. This is actually the least he’s ever weighed. He’s usually 15-16lbs.
here’s the info on the food:
Crude Protein 7.5% min
Crude Fat 2.0% min
Crude Fiber 1.8% max
Moisture 82.5% max

The starting dose is based upon the current weight. Since he’s on all canned food there’s a formula for the starting dose. I’ll be back.
 
Since he’s not acting right and was started too high I would skip tonight and start back in the morning. We can get you set up. Given his weight I think the starting dose should be no more than 1.25. Do your syringes have half unit markings?
 
A 13lb cat's starting dose would be 1.4U but we always suggest starting lower. You can always go up in dose if it's not enough but if you give too much, you can't take it out.

I'd suggest starting at 1U. It also takes 5-7 days before you'll know how that 1U dose is really working.

The "prescription" food is actually too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. Most of us feed our own cats foods like Fancy Feast Classics, Friskies pate's or 9-Lives ground because they're under 10% carbs, easy to find and affordable.

Ok so last night we didn't shoot. Today his AMPS was 280 we gave 1.25 and then his +2 was 259. I'll get another reading around his +6
I'm gonna work on switching his food over, he was having an upset stomach and diarrhea with his previous wet food which is when he went on the prescription sensitive with probiotic powder daily and he's been fine on that, but I'll look for a new food from the approved list to switch him to.

Yes it’s good. He should be hitting his peak nadir soon. That’s the lowest point in the cycle. Does he have IBD or a suspected food sensitivity? A novel protein might be one to look for if you switch. That’s one he’s never eaten before. Read food labels carefully because many have chicken in them even the label might not mention it.

He goes through periods where he gets diarrhea and I've brought him to the vet several times for it and they haven't found anything "wrong."
So all they had suggested was probiotics and this prescription food, we definitely see a difference with the probiotics so I will try to slowly change his food. He will eat any and everything he can find so it's never a problem getting him to try something else
 
I think a novel protein along with the probiotic is worth trying. There’s venison, rabbit, pork, and duck for starters. Try and find a single protein one to try and stick with it for a month. One person here feeds horse meat and kangaroo is another I used with Max but it can’t be sold where I live. I see you too are in Los Angeles so forget kangaroo. In what part of Los Angeles do you live?

That sounds like a good idea, I'll look into those. I'm in the Valley- North Hollywood area

I haven't heard of that one yet. Thank you for the links, I'm looking into it now. Right now I use the Fortiflora one recommended by the vet (expensive!!)
