Lantus vs Biosimilars?

Has anyone used Lantus and switched to a different glargine/biosimilar?

Or does anyone know if there is a difference in using Lantus or glargine/another biosimilar?

We recently got a script and we can't find a discount for Lantus - so we are getting quotes of $265+ and would like to pay less, if we can.

If you use a biosimilar, which is your preference?

Would love to get some input, so we understand which way to go.

Thanks!!

I did the testing on Basaglar when it was first released. China had been very tightly controlled on Lantus so most people thought I was out of my mind for risking it but I figured that the fact that she was so tightly controlled, if Basaglar was going to act differently, it'd show up in her numbers!

Once her depot was stable, it worked the exact same as Lantus.

You might also look into buying your Lantus (or Basaglar) from Canada. A box of 5 pens is $190 (including shipping) and that's 1500 total units which is enough to last most cats at least 1 year and some up to 2 years. Also, once they have a script, you don't have to get a new one every year like we do in the US.

If your vet wrote the script for a vial, all you have to do is call Marks and they'll send you the pens instead. Most cats can't use 1000 units in a vial before it starts to lose efficacy so the pens are the better buy.

I just did this (well, order is processing) -- and in fact the Lantus Solostar pens are back-ordered about a month so I just got the generic and it was cheaper anyway! About $140 for 5 pens I think it was. Marks Marine ftw

and yes they mentioned that since Lantus is OTC in Canada, it doesn't even matter if the script is expired or expires in the future, you never need a new one they don't care, they'll continue to fill it long as you need it

Yeah Marks really is fantastic and not having to worry about needing a new script every year was a blessing since I didn't want to listen to any more vets tell me "if you'd switch her to this "prescription" garbage....".

I got all the help I needed right here and am still eternally thankful, even over 3 years after China's passing.

They also still know what the meaning of "Customer service" is!

omg this is so true, I've only just today ordered from them the first time and they already called me back twice about this or that detail. And it was the same friendly chap, Linus. And he was like send us a photo of Hendrick along with your photo ID, he sounds awesome, we have a whole wall of pets

Wow, I live in Canada and only I paid $100 for 5 solostar pens (that ~$78 USD). That is quite a markup or does shipping cost that much.

I am so sorry to hear about this:(. Too bad you don't live near the border so you can just drive up.

Then again, I pay $75 for a box of 100 BG test strips.

Shipping is $25 so the 5 pack of Lantus pens is $165 but when you consider that same 5 pack in the US is over $500, you don't mind paying the $165.

Before Covid, we had several members who lived close enough to the border to make a day trip into Canada to get their insulin and it's still the best/cheapest option now that the border is open again (I think I heard it was open again anyway).
