Metronidazole/Flagyl

I took my diabetic cat into the vet yesterday for diaherra. She's had it for a couple of days. They gave her metronidazole/Flagyl 250mg. She is 14.8lbs. Does that sound like a very large dose for the cat? Also, the pill makes my kitty salivate/foam at the mouth. They told me that would happen but I'm wondering if anyone has anytips on how to make the pill go down smoother with less stress on my kitty in regards to the taste. Any tips or comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I just had my 13.6lb cat at the vet on Saturday for the same thing. They recommended the same dose of 250mg of Flagyl, he has been taking it everday and yesterday the diarreah seemed to clear up, so your cat should be fine. I got the liquid form....horrible. It fills up almost the whole syringe and takes forever to administer. Depending on the size of the pill, maybe you can try a pill shooter. Good luck.

Have you tried crushing it and putting it in the kitty's food? This might work on the premise your kitty will eat the entire meal.

Pill Pockets (Greenies) or if you are still going to just pill kitty, please syringe, carefully, some water down or see if she'll eat immediately after pilling.

Put a bit of butter on the tablet to coat it so it doesn't dissolve in the cat's mouth. It tastes pretty awful!

A pillpocket over that helps even more. If that makes it too large, cut the tablet into smaller hunks, coat, and wrap in pill pocket (these can be rolled out very thin, then wrapped around a piece of pill).

Use a pill shooter if the pill pocket is unsuccessful. Definitely make it smaller doing it this way.

Always follow with a couple of cc's of water so it doesn't stick in the esophagus.

Are pill pockets ok to use with FD kitties? I have been "hiding" the pill in a Stella & Chewy's nugget (water it down a little, stick the pill in the middle and pinch it together and it becomes like a pill pocket)

That is 37 mg/kg which is high, The dose is generally 10-15 mg/kg twice daily per Plumb's Vet Drug manual. It does taste terrible. I put mine in a gel capsule.

Just so you know I've taken Metronidazole/Flagyl many times - it's HORRIBLE tasting and for some god awful reason always sticks in my throat (the pill is big but it's also very chalky) - it's truly awful - so poor kitty is dealing with that - the butter might help- I wouldn't crush it up - it just tastes worse that way.

Good luck - it will make the tummy issues better pretty quickly I bet.

Well, Pancakes apparently does not like peanut butter but I remembered she does like butter, just regular butter. I coated the pill in it and it went down very smoothly. Last night she had a firm bowl movement. I think Pancakes is on her way to getting back to her regular ole self. Thanks again everyone for your help!
