Morning Testing

“New Member” - Good morning and thank you for letting me join this group. I am going to start testing tomorrow AM (wish me luck) but my question is that my cat wants his wet food right when we get up. Can I give him a small amount of wet food and then test him? Not sure how long it takes to have the small amount affect his glucose for this testing? Any ideas on what you do first thing in AM, let me know! Thanks again!

It all depends on the wet food carb % you mare giving mare you giving pates between 0-10% carbs? what insulin are you giving? you can give just a tiny snack but test right away, you can test, feed, shoot

Hi Corky, I am giving 1 unit of Lantus 2x a day and he is on FF classic pate.

great choice of food and carbs, are you home testing? most members use the ReliOn human monitor and strips (Walmart) no need for a pet meter, is important to test prior to shot and 3-4 times during the day, also feeding several times during the day with small meals or snacks to keep the Lantus Depot in check, we are very numbers oriented, we would like you to create your signature and spreadsheet, this way we do not have to ask you the same thing over and over again and we can all be on the same page, as well as assist you in Lantus dosing and/or all other concerns you may have, links below 😟 🤗

Just an FYI, not all of the Fancy Feast Classics are low carb. This is a link to a food chart that contains the percent of "as fed" carbs in most of the foods available in the US.

You might want to consider giving your cat a low carb treat (e.g., freeze dried chicken) while you're trying to test. I suspect that more members give an insulin injection when their cat is eating vs testing when the cat is eating. I would have to keep a grip on my cat's ear when testing which would have made it difficult for her to eat. (She was also quite food motivated and I suspect she would have offered a rather vocal lecture about my hanging on to her ear while she was attempting to eat.)

Thank you so much. I am going with the Turkey and Chicken. I have been waiting until he eats and then give him his shot. Haven't had luck for keeping him still for me to prick his ear yet. I'm going to try when he sits on the arm of my couch with me and see if that might work, plus there is a table light, which will help me finding the vein. It's a work in progress!

In a couple of weeks tge capillaries will swell and it will very easy to draw blood, see photos, that is what is called the “sweet spot”

Hometesting Links and Tips

Hold a flashlight under the ear to see where the vein is. You want to poke between the edge of the ear and the vein, not the vein itself. But if you accidentally poke the vein, no big deal. If your cat has light colored ears the vein will plump up when it's very warm and you'll be able to see it better.

this is a great picture, thank you! I ordered a flashlight last night, one that I can hold in my mouth. Thanks so much, you folks are the best.

That's exactly what I do I place it in my mouth as I'm pricking so I can see the droplet of blood, it works wonders;) 🤗

Corky, wonderful news. I just tested him!!!!! I know not first thing in the morning, but my concern was that I wouldn't be able to do it! He is at 262 and ate an hour ago. He was 369 at the vet last week. I know I need more numbers, but so relieved. I found a small flashlight and your pictures made it so much easier. Now, I'll work on seeing what I can do for the AM test. Thanks again!

This is very good news,, it will get much easier every day, now what we need is to see the numbers, post #6 has the links for you to create your signature and spreadsheet, when you create your signature and you need help with the SS, we will create it for you, let us know, also the next step is to transition to wet can foods 0-10%,carbs a slow transition, we don't want to upset his stomach, 1-2 tsp at a time, you need to test during the day when you start the transition, we want to lower his levels. Congrats Great job! :bighug:
