New member couple questions about wet food

My cat has been fed dry food all her life. Trying to swap to wet food after finding out she's diabetic. What are some of the better low carb options? I started with fancy feast but I see others say it can cause other health issues later. She also is very stubborn with wet food, I don't think it's that she doesn't like it, she just tends to lick it down to the sides then stop and I rescoop it into a pile until she won't eat anymore but still won't eat full servings. I've tried mixing in water and making it soupy but she'll drink the water and somehow even though it's mashed up, the food will mostly be left behind, and I've also tried mixing in freeze dried treats. I wanted to try a low carb dry food but I see there are issues with water intake and UTIs so would dry food but with a supplemental broth on the side be a good combo? Ty for any response, I tend to get overwhelmed and suffer from decision paralysis when face with new stress or a lot of options to have to consider. I'm also wondering if there is a specific type of glucose monitor and/or keytone monitor that is recommended.

A change to a low carb diet can significantly impact a kitty's BG numbers and greatly reduce the need for insulin. So any transition in diet when already on insulin, has to be made gradually and with careful monitoring of the BG (with home testing) and insulin requirements. We have had cats that have gone off insulin with just a change from high carb kibble to a low carb canned diet.

This is a wonderful website on feline nutrition that's authored by a vet. This is the link to a chart that lists most of the canned cat foods available in the US along with their nutritional information including carbohydrates. We consider low carb as under 10% although most members feed their cat a variety that's in the 5% neighborhood.

There are only a few low carb dry foods -- Young Again Zero Carb and Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein. You're correct in that dry food has a low moisture content. This issue coupled with most cats having a limited thirst drive can make dry food less than ideal for kidney health. Plus, diabetes is hard on the kidneys. If you're going to use dry food, making sure your cat is getting plenty of water will help. Broth is fine but be sure it is very low in sodium/salt. In addition to the traditional kibble, there are raw foods that are either air or freeze dried (e.g., ZiwiPeak or Stella & Chewys).

Many people here feed their cat Fancy Feast. To the best of my knowledge, it has not caused any health problems. Given how your cat is eating, you might want to consider a food that isn't pate style. For example, Tiki Cat has several low carb options that are shreds. To be honest, you may need to experiment.

As far as glucometers, we generally recommend a human meter. The strips are much less expensive than a pet specific monitor and if you run out of strips, you can get those for a human monitor almost anywhere. Strips for a pet meter are not easy to locate if you've run out and you usually have to buy them online. Many people here use the Walmart Relion meter. There isn't one specific ketone meter that's hugely popular. The Precision Xtra has been around for a long time. Several members have used the Keto Mojo. If you're going to go to Walmart, I'd see what ketone meters they stock. Just so you're aware, unless your cat had ketones present at diagnosis, you can use ketone urine test strips to test for ketones. You have to stalk your cat to the litter box and swipe the strip through your cat's urine stream (or collect a sample) but the urine strips are inexpensive.

Everyone one is completely overwhelmed at the beginning of this adventure. I promise, it does get easier! You and your cat will develop a routine. Also, this board typically has someone around 24/7. There are members from all over the world which is why someone is usually around. In addition, we like questions!!

Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. Youcan fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capillaries it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 10 or 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets any brand
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand not the lancing device
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
Look at the lancet under a light and you will see one side is curved upward, that's the side you want to poke with

Try putting a thin layer of Vaseline on the ear so the blood will bead up

Lots of people do feed Fancy Feast as it's economical. By itself it doesn't cause medical issues, but if a kitty already has some medical conditions, it might not be the best food. For example, kidney kitties often need lower phosphorus food, and FF is higher in phosphorus. If FF is what your cat will eat for now and is otherwise healthy, it's a good way to get her transitioned to wet.

In that picture, is that whole region circled in red the sweet spot or is it specifically one of the tiny blood vessels in that region and not the pink fleshy areas in between?

Don't aim for the big vein, or you'll "spray paint" the walls nearby. Which we have all done. Make sure you have a gauze handy to put pressure on tke poke site. So basically poke anywhere between the vein (but not on it) and the edge of the ear.

But I don't have to specifically aim for the smaller veins in between the big/main vein and edge of ear, any of that region in between is ok?

Anywhere between the edge of the ear and the vein is fine I poke my cat at random places along the edge of his ear and always get blood. Some cats only have one little area that will consistently give blood so try to aim for that area each time.

The Dr. Elsey's low-carb dry had a recent formula change that some people were not pleased about. Kobe is still transitioning from dry to wet. He eats some of both. He likes this PowerCat Kibble. I cannot speak to its long term use, but if you are looking for a low carb kibble to help you through the transition to wet, I can recommend the PowerCat. Extra water in the wet food is good. Kobe has a cat fountain in a high traffic area that he drinks from every time he walks past. It's tempting to put it out of the way, but I would recommend lots of water where your cat cannot miss it!

You didn't say that you were doing this, but from what I have read it's a bad idea to put water in dry kibble. Freeze dried stuff is a different story - I think you can serve that rehydrated.

Please do not buy the PowerCat Kibble. It is not low carb. I was told by somebody that is was, but it is NOT. It's actually medium carb... not sure exactly what % Calories from carbs, yet

I really hate how carb information isn't on most cat foods. Feels like with humans, many cat foods are designed to intentionally cause diabetes since insulin etc is such big business. The science diet stuff for sensitive stomach I was giving mochi before swapping i found out was like 25-30% carb iirc

Dry foods are made for the convenience of Humans. Just fill a bowl and set it out and refill as needed. Some people don't even bother to wash the bowl out daily so bacteria just grows in the bowl and on the leftover food. Catinfo.org goes into the details of cat nutrition and the dry vs canned issues. All the starches needed to hold the ingredients in that kibble shape means carbs and some cheap brands are super high in carbs. Big name brands vets recommend aren't any better. Long ago there was a dry food chart that listed all of the common brands at that time and I recall seeing 40% carbs in some

She had a little bit of cat acne at one point which is when I learned how important it was to wash everything so now I'm diligent with it every day. Also why I feel like I've been studied for the most important final of my life these last few days learning everything I can about fd so I can make sure I give her the best care.

She took her first shot like a champ and didn't even react (hopefully i did it right but no moisture in area so I think I got it in) Have the libre while we both get better with the ear pricks but I have everything on hand and have been testing her urine with the ketostix daily

Ty! It's such a huge weight lifted and relief having the first one behind us. My brain is like a worst case scenario simulator so now that I know she doesn't mind it's like I can finally breathe since first getting the diagnosis

Ty! Lol that's funny. Mochi is the same, so I'm just rubbing her ear by hand, she does not like the objects approaching her face. One time I bought one of those brushes you wear as a glove and her instinct was to attack it lol. It helps so much when our babies are such troopers with all of the prodding and poking.
