Hi, my name is karol, and my cat Henry just got diagnosed 7 days ago. It's day 7 and he's been experiencing diarrhea. He was put on lantus insulin & we've been trying our best twice a day, 12 hours apart. Getting the hang of it, but he just seems different. He's drinking and eating wet food but just behaving differently and now the diarrhea. He's lost alot of weight because we put him on wet food. Did we stop the crunchies too early? Just lost at this point.

Welcome to FDMB!

I suspect that you transitioned Henry to canned food a bit too quickly. Many cats end up with some GI distress if you make an abrupt switch from dry to canned food. While it will pass, you may want to help the passage along a bit more quickly. I would check around at health food stores or even Whole Foods to see if any place has a particular probiotic, S. boulardii, in stock. If not, you can find Jarrow's brand on Amazon. Start with 1/4 of a capsule mixed into food. It things aren't moving in the right direction, increase it to 1/2 a capsule. Some cats will benefit from pureed pumpkin as an anti-diarrhea solution. Just make sure you get plain pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling.

How is Henry behaving differently?

Some of the weight loss is due to the diabetes. With uncontrolled diabetes, when your cat eats, the end product of metabolism (i.e., glucose), doesn't get into the cells. As a result, your cat is hungry all the time but because the glucose is floating around in his blood, he's starving. insulin is what moves glucose into the cells and without enough insulin, the glucose isn't going where it's supposed to go. Since he's not getting the benefit of nourishment, diabetics lose weight. However, you're also correct in that a low carb diet its likely to cause some weight lose. The good thing about a low carb diet, though, is that cats are obligate carnivores which means that their bodies aren't able to process carbs.

Welcome to FDF perhaps the diarrhea is a sign of the sudden change in diet, from kibbles to wet food is a slow transition, putting him on wet food has nothing to do with weight loss, is the diabetes that caused the weight loss, do you have lab test, if so, can you check if Ketones are negative or positive? I will tag several members knowledgeable on Lantus that can assist you , we are here to help you, we need to know more about Henry we need you to create your signature and cerate a Spreadsheet, we are very number oriented, and not to worry we are lost at first when our fur baby is diagnosed, but we are here to help you, it is important to home test, especially before each shot, and we need the spreadsheet to see how the Lantus is behaving in Henry throughout the day, a diabetic cat should have a diet of wet can food between 0-10% carbs, but the transition from dry to wet should be done slowly, it is very important to home test, most of our members use the human monitor ReliOn Premier and strips, you should always test before dosing, below are several links to create your signature and spreadsheet, we are very numbers oriented, there's also a Drs food list and carb calculator link for you, I will tag several members that can help you with dosing and your concerns for Lantus, You and Henry are in the right place,, if you have problems creating the spreadsheet post us and someone will assist you with it.:bighug::cat::cat:
