New thread for the Brutus boy !
He is looking good and enthusiastic about food today!!
Things I want to ask my vet about include: Going back to 2 units of insulin and starting 75ml of subQ fluids daily instead of 100ml every other. If i missed any advice from the last thread feel free to repeat it on this one !

@Parent of Brutus
Next time you start a new thread here is how to link the previous post
To link your previous posts
Your previous days post will always be in the URL all the way up top ignore where it says insert or cancel I'm just trying to show you where your previous days post will be
Just ignore where it says insert and cancel
Just copy your previous days post and then paste it when you do your new post new thread

Like I said
your previous days post it will be the one all the way up top, above the pic of that cat and the picture of a bottle of insulin there, let me know if you understand it, only way I can explain it :cat:

Oh boy, he is a cutie! Glad he is feeling better which I am sure makes you feel better!:bighug:

Someone with experience will confirm your snack question, but I have seen responses for DKA kitties to yes, feed what they want and ideally no/low carb.

I do have ketostix at home but have not had luck catching my boy in the box to test his pee. How does using un-clumping litter work for that ? or is there any other advice / methods to get a sample from him to test ?

Catching and testing urine

Some.people slide a - dedicated - soup ladle underneath. Others put saran wrap on top of the litter where they usually pee and put the test strip there

He keeps wanting more and more snacks and I know I should let him eat as much as he wants to get better. As long as it’s low/no carb is it fine to keep feeding him snacks between mealtime ?

From @Bron and Sheba (GA) on your previous thread:
"Because Brutus has had DKA there are several things you can do to help him recover.
  • you need to give one and a half times as many calories as he normally eats. Offer snacks every couple of hours during the day and evening as well as the 2 main meals. Food is like a medicine and helps keep ketones away. If your kitty won’t eat the low carb food, feed him whatever he will eat as eating any food is better than not eating,
  • Don’t skip any doses of insulin as insulin helps keep ketones away. If the BG is not high enough to give the dose…stall, don't feed and test again in 20 minutes and post and ask for help.
  • Test daily for ketones. Put the results of the tests into the remarks column of the SS so we can see. Please report any trace ketones at all. To test for ketones you will need to buy a bottle of ketostix from a pharmacy. Please get these asap as it is very important we know if ketones are present
  • Give antinausea medication if needed such as ondansetron or cerenia. Nausea is very common in post DKA kitties and it needs to be addresses immediately
  • Give appetite stimulant if needed after the antinausea medication
  • Give extra fluids. If kitty will tolerate warm water in the food, put a teaspoon into each snack..
  • Ask the vet about subQ fluids
  • Set up a spreadsheet and test the BG frequently
  • Post daily with updates and ask for help as often as needed."
Try low carb first, but any food is better than no food!!!

I’m trying to figure out a reasonable testing routine for us right now. right before and then 4 hours after his shots is the goal, right ? I feel bad for his poor little ears they are getting bruised from poking :(

With ProZinc as with any insulin it is important t to test on AMPS and PMPS and at least one after each shot like + 2 and + 6:bighug::bighug::cat::cat: ( see Corky’s SS)

Happy to see Brutus is doing a bit better.
There's a ratio of hk of body weight per ml of SQ. It's important to keep it so his electrolytes balance is not going off. If I remember correctly it's 10-20 ml per 1kg of body weight.

I'm using the syrnge method to give SQ. Fistuk hates it and with a syringe it goes very fast and he lets me do it.
Basically, I draw the fluids to a 60ml syringe then the extension line goes between the syringe and the needle.
It's also helpful when the water are warmed to the cat's body temp, round 37-38 Celsius degrees.

I use pure alovera gel after poking. It helps the poking hole heal very quickly. Fistuk has no bruising on his ears thanks to this.

You're doing an amazing job helping Brutus :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yes you are Congratulations Brutus knows and feels your love. Well done!!!!,YOU GOT THIS!!!:bighug::bighug::cat::cat:

If his ears look like they are getting sore

I have read that many members use pure coconut oil, I have copied this from one of the members posts
just make sure the only ingredient is coconut oil (mine is solid at room temp and I would take an itty bitty dab and rub on his ears)
It seemed to help with the healing
You might be able to get it at a health food store or just Google pure coconut oil
It's fine if they lick it

Brutus just put down his dinner in record time !!! (sub 30 mins, he has usually been taking almost an entire hour to eat a can of pate)

we have some !! and have been using it :) thank you so much

So glad he is eating well that is so important. Yes let him eat all he wants at the moment. Just leave the 2 hours Preshot if he’s eating plenty at other times.

How is he generally? Lethargic? Alert? Communicating with you?
He is doing really well ! talking, eating, alert, jumped up into his “relaxation basket” that i haven’t seen him in in probably over a week. he tried playing with corn husks when i was putting away groceries.

Very happy for you both! I see he is already hitting some greens, was that test today or yesterday? Looks like you may have the same date twice. Great job getting him stable! :bighug::bighug:

Yep. My kitty had DKA when he was 11. I found this forum. And he lived to be 20.
GREAT NEWS on the ketones! And, a green today to boot :D

Since he had a DKA, we want him to eat a lot of food. Just try to keep it low carb (10 percent and under) if that is what he will eat — and try not to feed him for two hours prior to the AMPS and PMPS tests. Treats given with each test don’t count. He should always get his LC testing treat!
