I haven’t been on this thread for a long time as my Kevin was very well controlled (on 9U BID glargine) for almost 2 years. However, starting this April his BG became uncontrolled with initial thought he had a UTI due to also noting some dribbling of urine after peeing and an abnormal UA.
My primary vet sent us to an internal medicine specialist who did a $2,000 dollar work up to rule out acromegaly with labs and multiple lymph node biopsies which was all unremarkable. She has suggested sedating him for a CT head to see if there is a mass but we have proceeding with a freestyle libre for now to see where his BG is.
He was started on Solensia a month ago for his arthritis and is doing amazing though at our last vet visit was found to have protein in urine and sent back to specialist. They just called me saying he has a urine protein-Cr ratio of 1.2 but not to worry as his kidney function is normal? I am very worried though. His UPC was last checked in 2022 and was borderline at 0.4 so something is progressing. We are now with 2 vets and are at the vet 2x monthly since April and I feel like this is being pushed off and I’m really concerned his kidneys are going to fail soon.
Has anyone had a similar experience and have it be nothing? He is now on 9.5 unit BID of insulin and still not great control but did not have glucose or ketones in his urine. He does still intermittently leave a tiny spot of urine behind after he used litter box … I have mentioned this to 6 vets since April with no help. I just feel like he is impending kidney failure and want to stop it early if it’s just protein in the urine .. but I’m not sure how to do that without a vets help. I thought the leaking after could be arthritis pain which is why we are now on Solensia and gabapentin (which can also help with idiopathic cystitis).
I am about to have my first child and all I want is for him to know Kevin as Kevin has meant the world to me for so many years and is the love of my life. I am also stressing about how labor will go and worried if I’ll be in hospital longer than expected as Kevin does not do well without me even with our usual caregivers. I am not due until January so am trying to get this under control before then.

9 units is a lot for a non acro, but maybe it is the high carb food you are feeding him.
