Remission??

Hello! My last post was before I boarded my cat, Bun, at the vet for nearly 4 weeks. We picked her up today and our vet said that she hasn't needed insulin (Vetsulin) for the last 2 weeks because her numbers have been steadily between 80-100!! I couldn't believe it! When I left her, her numbers were in the high 400's! She's also on Prednisolone, so I'm double-shocked! Just wanted to ask for some advice, the vet said they had her mostly on wet food but she was eating some dry, and I know she's always eaten dry at home until she became diabetic and we began to offer more and more wet food. I'm scared of her numbers climbing back up, but I want her to eat! So looking for some guidance on our next steps as we navigate remission/the possibility of her needing insulin again. For now, I'm so happy and relieved! She thrived while being at the vet and I don't want her progress to go backwards.

Could the vet provide you with a record of Bun's blood glucose results? I'd also be curious regarding what Bun was being fed while boarded.

There are some cats that when transitioned to a low carb diet go into remission. Keep in mind that remission means they are still diabetic but they are a diet controlled diabetic. A stress like illness or eating high carb food can put the kitty back in diabetic numbers. If what the vet was doing worked, I'd keep doing what the vet was doing!

We also recommend that your continue to home test. You don't need to test with the same frequency but in the beginning since you're wanting to be sure these are solid changes, I might test twice a day at your usual pre-shot times. Once you see the numbers are stable, you can switch to once a day, then less. Keeping an eye on the numbers can head off any unexpected problems like the need for a dental, a UTI, or another medical issue raising numbers. It's a good approach to prevention.
