So about vacations

Gone are the times for having someone come in once a day to feed them wet food.

How do the parents of diabetic cats go on vacation?

We have 2 times this summer that we will be gone for a week.
I am scared to leave Bert home alone and then to have to trust his care to someone else.

What have others done??
I know I am thinking way ahead, but I worry about my guy.
 
While I certainly understand your thinking ahead, don't borrow trouble yet. It looks like you are just starting. If your vacations aren't till summer, who knows, you could be one of the lucky ones and your cat could be OTJ by then. If not, you've got lots of time between now and then to think about friends that you can teach to test and shoot. Or take a look at where other FDMB members are. I know there have been a few that have been able to help each other out if they are close enough. So, don't worry too much yet. Just work at getting your baby regulated and healthy. The rest will work itself out.
 
I wish I could bring them with, but a road trip from Pennsylvania to Minnesota would not be good for either of them.
The other week is to the Jersey Shore and they do not allow animals :(

I think i just think of how much care he is needing right now and it is hard for me to think I will be able to trust someone els to care for him.
 
Those who have been around since '06 (if there are any) will remember that I was going through this - and we got a large cage that fit across the back of the van - left it in the living room until the two of them became accustomed to it - then to town - then up the coast a bit - and ended up with them on a 3-month, 8000 mile trip cross-country in summer of '07. They visited relatives in FL, and FDMBers in TN, visited at Dian's in PA, saw FDMBers between there and IN, spent a week in MN, on to WA and then home. It was a great trip and we met so many great FDMB members and kitties.

So now we take them with us if we're going to be gone over shot/test time and they are in the cage in the van.

We found so many pet-friendly places all cross-country - at the PNW reunion a year ago in WA, there were several FDMB kitties in the motel. The owner was a "cat lady" and loved it.

Good luck - if you truly can't take them, the next best thing I would think is to have someone actually stay at your home and teach them to test, etc. and stay in touch via phone so you can stay on top of the doses, etc.

I have to go out of town for work and I take vacations too..

I have tried boarding, but Pepper did very poorly (wouldn't eat and bit the vet tech).. so that was out!
My brother now comes over and house sits for me.. and is a pro at taking care of Pepper too!
It took some time, but Pepper is real good about it now..

Of course, I still call home AMPS and PMPS.. Okay.. and sometimes in between. Now, my DB just answers the phone with the BG number (no hello!). Love caller ID :mrgreen:

I have to travel for work. One of the nurses from my vet's office does petsitting on the side. She knows how to test and shoot. Of course, Gabby won't let her test and she's lucky to get a shot in most of the time!

If there's a Board member near you, maybe you could swap test and shoot services when both of you are on vacation.
