Hi all,
Any thoughts on supplements to help with overall effects of diabetes on the body? I’ve read that probiotics can help. I ask this because Over the last few months my girl has had a few instances of vomiting up her food. Yesterday it was combined with some diarrhea She’s not eating as she normally would since last night. She’s just nibbling. Makes sense if she doesn’t feel well I guess. Any thoughts on what would randomly cause these symptoms? She didn’t get into any contraband She had a full blood work up last month and everything was normal. I’m trying not to go into panic mom mode and hopefully whatever this is will resolve itself today if not we will be off to the vet. Wondering if a supplement , maybe a probiotic could help. Was looking at a product called NHV Mellit from naturalpetproducts.com. Curious if anyone has used it or if anyone here uses something else they may recommend. Thank you!

It could be a number of things. I may simply be that Little has a GI bug. If the symptoms don't resolve in a couple of days, you may want to talk to your vet. It's not "normal" for cats to vomit so you want to make sure there's not something more that a virus that's causing the problem.

Probiotics can help with the diarrhea. I use S. boulardii. You may be able to find it at a GNC or Whole Foods. It's certainly available online thru Amazon

Take a look at the information in this link. It talks about supplements/meds for nausea/vomiting and diarrhea.

Thank you so much for your response. We did end up at the vet last Saturday and it’s been nerve wracking since then.
Of course my regular vet is on vacation so the vet we saw gave sub Q fluids at my insistence as she wasn’t eating right. He also gave an anti nausea shot and prescribed Metronidazole for 5 days. Things got better. Even had a normal poop on Thursday which was the last day of the metronidazole. 24 hrs later back to diarrhea and no appetite. I had some left over Metronidazole so started her back on it as I couldn’t reach my vet on the weekend. That said- went and picked up more Metronidazole today and vet said do 5 more days. I am stressed to the gills. It’s a horrible tasting med and she is hating me and even flinching when I give her insulin because she doesn’t trust me right now.
How would an indoor cat get a GI bug and why would it last over a week??!! Anyhow back to my original question. Do You give that pro biotic daily just for general health or was there an issue you were trying to quell ?

If diarrhea is an issue, then S. boulardii is a good antidote as an alternative to antibiotics. Sienne provided you with a link to the site that tells you how much to dose. Jarrows brand has S. boulardii and MOS, a polysaccharide or sugar that does not get absorbed in the body and acts as a prebiotic.

Once the diarrhea is resolved you can move to a probiotic that contains many more different strains of bacteria. I give Visbiome to my Ruby who has small cell lymphoma. It's the most potent probiotic available on the market. Human probiotics are better than pet ones because they are regulated and pet ones are not. It's a brand recommended by Dr. Susan Marsilio, a specialist in GI disorders in cats. Get the capsules, not the packets or powder, and start with 1/32 tsp of it (a smidge) sprinkled in food twice a day, then you can work your way up to one capsule. Even if your cat does not have a diagnosed GI issue like Ruby, probiotics are important for diversifying the gut flora, boosting the immune system, and combating the inflammation that can cause higher BG numbers.

If you do give Visbiome or another probiotic (NOW brand also makes some good ones), I would suggest you pair it with a prebiotic. Slippery elm powder, canned plain pumpkin, psyllium husk, anything that gives the probiotic something to work with. All of the fiber sources I mentioned will not affect BGs and safe for sugar kitties.

Good luck!

Hello again Katherine,
So I took my girl off the S boulardi started her on the closest equivalent to Visbiome I could find about 5 days ago this one actually has a PRE built in as well. She has been pooping more regularly and at times it’s been a bit looser than usual. She also seemed like she didn’t feel well yesterday and a bit was finicky about food -But she seems fine now. Are these “normal” things while her body gets used to a “full spectrum” probiotic? I’ve read that S boulardi is not a long term probiotic but she seemed to do really well on it. If she doesn’t improve on the new PRO B in a few days would you recommend adding the S Boulardi back in or going back to maybe just that? Any advice/ opinion appreciated.
