Hi everyone,

Meet Roo -- an almost 10-year-old female calico.

She was recently diagnosed with diabetes on March 8th/9th & we are just beginning to navigate everything that comes with it.

Currently transitioning to Royal Canin Glycobalance (wet and dry).

Roo will be getting her 1st dose of Senvelgo around 5pm today (March 16th).

Even as a nurse myself, this diagnosis & the new set of routines have felt pretty overwhelming — so I am really grateful to have found this community!

I’d love some recommendations for a couple of things:

1. Wet foods that are more of a pâté texture (either prescription diabetic or lower calorie)
— Even when mashed up, the Glycobalance wet food still seems a little too chunky for Roo’s liking.

2. At-home blood ketone meters
— Are there any brands people have had good experiences with?

3. Blood glucose meters
— Roo’s vet recommended AlphaTrak, but I’d love to hear what others here use & what has worked well for you and your cat(s).

Thank you so much in advance!

All the best,
Jordan & Roo

Welcome to FDMB Jordan & Roo

The best insulin for cars are ProZinc and Lantus they are a 12-hour insulin easy on the cat's system

1 - Diet A diabetic cat need to have a diet of wet can or raw food between 0-10% carbs (dry matter carbs)most members use Fancy Feast pates or Friskies most feed up to 5%, please do not feed the Glycobalance wet or dry nothing in that food or the "prescribed", these foods are between 20-30% carbs . A drs approved list below, the third column contains the carb %s, also Roo needs to have several small meals or snacks during the day (a schedule) grazing is out of the question
2- Ketone meters you can either buy an inexpensive ketone test kit (Walmar), a strip you place while Roo is peeing and check to see if positive or negative, also there is a monitor can test ketones and glucose level with blood , expensive Keto Mojo Monitor (Amazon)

3 - Glucose meter Most members use the ReliOn human monitor and strips Walmart) very inexpensive , no need to purchase the AlphaTrak or any Pet meter each strip for the Alpha are $1.00 each. Or any human monitor will do, please keep asking we are here for you, it is overwhelming even in the medical field that your baby has FD, but the important thing is that is manageable with the right diet, meal schedule, home testing the right insulin and lots of love , is an easy recipe, an we are here for you, keep posting your concerns
