When should I see numbers drop?

My 15 year old cat buddy was diagnosed 1 week ago. He’s on 1 unit of Lantus 2x a day. He’s eating fancy feast chicken pate only. He’s doing much better. Eating more, drinking less and much more active and normal. I’ve only been testing his glucose twice daily right before he eats and his injection. He’s been around 300-450 or so each time. Is it bad that the numbers aren’t going down? When should I expect him to get into a normal range? I haven’t tried to do a curve yet. If it makes any difference he was diagnosed with pancreatitis prior to diabetes.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
It is great you are hometesting and taking a test before every insulin shot. To know if the insulin is working though, you will need to be getting a test in sometime between +4 and +7 ( that is 4 to 7 hours after the dose is given).
By the time you are taking the next test after 12 hours, the insulin has worn off and the blood glucose will have gone back up higher.
Lantus dosing is based on how low the dose takes your kitty, not the preshot.
Insulin is a hormone and it doesn’t work like an antibiotic, where it fixes the problem straight away. It takes times for the cat to get used to the hormone and for things to start working. Some cats get the hang of it quickly but most cats can take months or longer. So patience is the biggest thing that is needed with feline diabetes.

Here is what I would suggest.
I am going to give you a link to our spreadsheet. If you set that up and test before every shot and then again during the cycles, we can help you with dosing. And if you would set up your signature (vey easy) so that we can see all about Buddy , we will be very happy to help you. We need all that information to be able to do so:)

Are you feeding a low carb wet diet?
Are you given snacks during the cycles as well as the 2 main meals?
Do you have a hypo kit set up in case of low numbers? There is information about that in the below link as well.
We have 2 dosing methods for Lantus and you can choose one to follow. More into about that later.
It’s not uncommon for diabetic cats to get pancreatitis. How is his appetite now?

Thank you! I added my signature and I’ll work on the spreadsheet. I’ll try testing him 4-6 hours after his morning dose. He’s eating only fancy feast pate. I do give him 3 feedings a day or he will throw up. I give him half a can of fancy feast pate midday at 1 pm. His shots are at 7:15. Sometimes I give him his Cerenia meds mixed with a Churu, if he’s been vomiting more often. He was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis 1 year before being diagnosed with diabetes.
