f you're not already aware, xylitol is extremely toxic for cats and dogs. It can also cause hypoglycemia.
I am not aware of any studies that really conclude that it is toxic to cats. Seems it is inconclusive.

Well, thanks to this June 2018 study out of Hungary and published in the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, we now know that the answer is almost certainly* #3 above... that xylitol isn't toxic to cats! Or, at least, it doesn’t appear to have the same blood sugar-lowering toxic effect in cats as it does in dogs — we can’t be as definitive about the liver cell-damaging toxic effect (see note about why below).

Based on our results, xylitol did not induce toxic effects on cats.

Effects of p.o. administered xylitol in cats

However, studies show it is toxic to dogs
Dog owners should know that xylitol can be toxic to dogs, even when the relatively small amounts from candies are eaten. If your dog eats a product that contains xylitol, it is important to take the dog to a veterinarian immediately.

See Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2016), Mar 22; 3:2 which did note toxic indications.
However, this article, J Vet Pharmacol Ther. 2018 Jun;41(3):409-414 concluded there were not toxic effects.

At the least, the research is inconclusive.
For my pets I will not take any chances. No xylitol, birch sugar, or anything else they may call it for my pets.
