Sounds like a good plan-- I might even try bumping the carbs up with a bit more MC. The "smidge" has seemed to work well for slowing him down some, but we'd like to get to a place where you aren't testing every hour on these days, too.

I'd be careful giving too much MC. You want to slow him down but not stop him in his tracks. :) Got to get him into those healing numbers more too so he gets used to them and stops bouncing so much.

This fine gauge lancets and good ole Relion Confirm need tiny blood sample ..grateful for that :)

So, I was thinking about this. I've been more or less assuming that Elmo's bounces are due to drop speed, not where he ends up. The reason I've been assuming this is that I've been assuming that his relapse was caught earlier than most new diabetics-- so he hasn't really had a lot of time to "get used to" high numbers. I could be wrong about this, and I also could be wrong about just how long it takes for a cat's body to decide that reds and blacks are normal. Maybe it happens really fast, especially for a bounce-prone kitty like Elmo (note: my own Amber has never been a bouncer, so I don't have the hands-on experience here).

Anyway, this is all to say, I've been less concerned with trying to steer him down to greens so he can get re-acclimated, and more concerned with propping him up early to keep him from yo-yo-ing. But maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way? What do you guys think?

Most cats bounce when in higher numbers. Personally I would not give mc or hc if readings are over 200. It's just keeping them in the higher numbers. You might want to try a lc at the higher end like 6-8% at shot time for their meal and regular lc there after. Some cats bounce all the way to remission, usually but not always the bounces get smaller and shorter. Again just my two cents.

I think it's catch 22. He zooms down and then he goes zooming back up. If you look at some cycles he goes way up at +1 then falls back down closer to PS level by +2. (AM 13th, PM 14th) If you took the +1 test out of the equation, the drop wouldn't be that swift. Not sure why he zooms up that much at +1. Is his pre-shot meal strictly LC?

Here's a puzzle piece to ponder: could his eating LC 2 and baby food overnight be part of this ? He eats better thru the night than thru the day ...hate to halt it because he is a grazer and it's good for him to eat when hungry ...

Let Elmo eat when he feels like it. As long as you know whether his AMPS is food influenced or not, there is no reason to make him fast overnight. I fed Menace during the night and I think most folks leave some food out for kitty to munch on. Better for Elmo overall and it keeps him happy!

If he's awake, take a test. See how 4 hours of not eating affects a downward cycle.

Taking Elmo down to visit the DS at uni. The DS is great with cats. Not far, but I can't highway drive because of vertigo, so it's a double decker bus, a train that always arrives late, then an express city bus. Going to be staring at my knees the entire time.

    Vines for a high green.

Beth, he seems to hit his nadir around +7/8 when it is obvious so he's a later nadir kitty at least for now. Some cats are like clockwork and others are all over the map. When Elmo is bouncing, it's not so clear but on the days he's hit blues and greens, it's more apparent. Chances are you'll see him start rising fairly soon.
I am loving seeing those greens. Thank you Elmo! :D

Leaving it to Linda and Nan to field that question. But look at those lovely, healing greens.:D
Celebratory ice cream for Elmo's humans dinner.
Getting late. Off to make dinner. Pasta with tomatoes, spinach, arugula, basil, pancetta, and parmesan. Basically, once around the fridge. No ice cream, sadly.

How are his ears today? As Linda said, he's most likely going to start heading up pretty soon, and he's still very safe, but I'm tempted to get the +10 anyway. If his ears are still sore, though, maybe hold off...

I'm so glad to hear that! It's amazing to watch them, when they feel much better. Those nasty ole high numbers don't make anyone feel good...enjoy his 'feel-good' time. He may bounce again - just ride it out. His body will adjust to those low numbers - right now by spiking his BG - but it'll eventually level down - for the most part. It seems like all these kitties tend to spike now and then...when they get too low. Try not to panic...but just test and expect the unexpected...It's possible you'll get to shoot your first green tonight. Are you ready?

I think you can nix the +5 and the +8 or +9 and still leave the story intact.

You've not shot any pre-shot that low before Beth. Do you have lots of strips, lancets and food selection? Chances are good Elmo is going to bounce and these questions are going to be for not but gotta ask in case he has something new up his sleeve!

I'd shoot full dose and keep the momentum going. Retest at +1 and if he happens to be dropping, feed him then with your LC/MC concoction.

If you're ready for it, you could shoot. He's rising and will likely bounce (the only question is when he'll really get going with that). Having the dose on board will be helpful, and also will keep the depot stable.

... and Elmo is probably off in a corner, lounging, maybe cleaning himself a bit, wondering what all the fuss is about (and eyeing the MC and HC food options!).
