Tired Thursday. Hope I can catch a nap today. I think the stress of the vet visit yesterday wore me out.

Have a wonderful day. All kitties - surf safe.

@Osha @carfurby

Thank you. I have to get working in finding insulin. I just sent Alan (from the supply closet) a PM but am a little gun shy about having them shipped (again). What a waste. And I intentionally ordered/had them shipped back in February (and then we got into the 80's). I have 1/4 of a vile left and if anything happens to it I am completely out!

I know the folks in Florida get it shipped in the summer, Mark's packs extra ice packs and Styrofoam coolers I think. @Karen & Lily @saltycat. But if your packages might remain in the hot sun for hours after they are delivered, that might be too much. I actually have stuff like supplements delivered to my office in the summer instead of my house so I know the stuff won't be sitting on my front stoop all day in the sun

ugh...I am SO sorry about the insulin. As Paul mentioned, I think if they pack it correctly and do expedited shipping, and it doesn't wait outside after being delivered, it should be ok. It really stinks, thinking you are extra prepared and having it ordered in February, only to have to try and do it when it is not an ideal time. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

@Bronx's dad @Osha @carfurby

It took 6 days to get here. Ice packs were completely melted. I ordered it on Wednesday, Feb 1st and it was delivered (to my work) 02/06 (Monday). I have no way of knowing if it sat in a truck (in the heat) over the weekend. It is the 1st cartridge I have used from that shipment. I started it on 06/25. It is the only factor I can come up with that might have bumped his numbers up.

Alan replied to my query...

"The manufacturer of lantus says if can be left in 100 degree plus heat for up to 30 days, so it is no normal insulin. The few days it takes to ship it via priority mail wont hurt it. That said ice packs can damage it because to make it heat tolerant it turned out to be cold sensitive, below 32 degrees can damage it."

The cartridges are inside tamper-proof plastic, inside a mfg box with the ice packs that are all inside the insulated bubble package that was inside the Styrofoam box. When I got the package I immediately put it in my refrigerator and then ran it home at lunch to the refridge at home.

I would try another cartridge from that shipment. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
I'd try another cartridge before I ordered more. Sometimes you can just get a bad cartridge.
Oh, I will. Definitely. I just need to have one on hand that I trust (elimination of factors). I still have a little over 1/4 of the vile.

This cartridge DID get him to 48 12 cycles after I started it (started on 06/25 PM cycle, 48 was on 07/01 AM cycle). IDK. Hubby is about ready to shoot me for changing too many factors too close together. I can't blame him. :banghead:

207 phos is close enough to being under 200
And less on the Paté and Shreds (154). Our choices just keep shrinking.

There are no raws listed on Dr. Lisa's list and I have never been able to determine phosphorus levels on raw. Am considering looking into making my own food, just a time issue.

Really anxious to see how his levels are doing.

I would assume the raw beef, chicken and turkey are low, while rabbit is high. Not sure about lamb? But the more I look, who knows since some beef formulas are low in phos but some are high?

IDK, I know bones impact it. I just don't want to go through it and not know for sure. He was on raw and was doing well on it right before his 2nd panc flare that hospitalized him. I switched him back to FF Turkey & Giblets to try and get him eating again and then vet switched him to Hills k/d and then one month of steroids and then FD. :banghead:

Learned a lot since then.

Rad Cat is supposed to have the least bones I think. I use the lamb, chicken & turkey since Bronx didn't really like the beef or venison. I'm gonna give them a call about the phos since you now have me thinking..

Please let me know. I can't get Rad cat here (I don't think - I am going to look again). Too expensive to have it shipped. I can get Instinct and Chewy and Stella - but neither is available at a convenient location.

I am trying to find one I saw that was "made-to-order" specifically for diseases. I thought maybe it was Darwin - but it isn't.
ETA - it is Darwin.

How does the phosphorus look on this? This is the non-rx Darwin food.

I am assuming 2.2 equals 220 for the chicken?

Awesome, thanks for that. So their .8g/100g would equal 80mg?
I have no idea. I don't understand all of these figures and calculations. I wish we had a nutritionist on here that could explain it to me in plain English. :) There as so many inconsistencies too. :blackeye::confused:

If you look at Tanya's website, and her page on canned food data, the raw food #'s breakdown is at the bottom. There are several below 1% phosphorus, including Radcat. It really doesn't take a lot of work to make your own. Order EZComplete on line. Go to butcher, pick up meat. Buy filtered water. Make sure you have a kitchen scale and containers to freeze a daily portion in. Then mix meat, water, premix (using scale for quantities). Fill freezer containers with daily amount - put in freezer.

I wouldn't get the regular chicken Darwin's Paul has linked (too many bones so high in phosphorus, ie. greater than 1%), but their kidney support formula is low in phosphorus. In general, stay away from raw products with ground bones and go for ones that use eggshell calcium or other products for calcium.

Do you have to grind the meat or buy it pre-ground? By "filtered water" do you mean bottled drinking water? How do you know daily amount? Same as canned? He gets about 3.3-3.5oz/cycle of canned food.

Some people grind - I am lazy. ;) I just go to my exotic/organic meat butcher and ask him to grind it for me. You don't want to buy preground that has been hanging around a while. On the water, oops! I meant distilled water. Cheap by the gallon.

The amount of raw to feed is a little less and varies by weight of cat. About 3/4 of the way down this page on the FoodFurLife website is a formula based on weight. Neko ate about 5.5 oz of canned food and about 4 oz of raw food to maintain her weight.
How do you know which ones use eggshell vs. bone?
Read the ingredient list.

:D

Wish we had better meat markets here. I would have to get from supermarket but HEB has great fresh chicken. But I would have to grind my own.

White or dark meat? Mix of both? How soupy is the finished product? Did you ever make your own nuggets using ice trays?

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

I used a mix of white and dark meat, some fat but not too much. With EZComplete, you can play with how much water you add. Mine wasn't that soupy and I add a little warm water to warm it up. I didn't use ice trays, but found some small ziploc containers that held one day's worth of food. Trays would have worked too.

Some supermarket meat departments will grind meat for you if you ask.

I am going to post an official BW post but he is just quick note - a little anemic and his Spec fPL is elevated (no surprise - kinda knew it would be).

but am a little gun shy about having them shipped (again
Did you have an issue with Alan and packing the insulin? I just ordered a 5 pack from him. I want one to keep in the fridge "just in case" and my friend is getting the other 4 pens. I was worried about the heat. Alan is in Texas so your shipment should get there quickly.

Didn't order them yet. He was out of the 5/$100. I haven't given up on the one's in the fridge yet. I have 4 more brand new and it could have been a panc flare causing the higher numbers. I also still have almost 1/4 of a vile that is good - that is what I switched back to. Did you see what he sent me in the pm?

Not sure if you saw this post about possibly too much testing causing anemia:

uummmm. Ok. Not sure I buy that. o_O

Bloodwork is updated on the Labs tab and the actual lab results linked at the column head (07/05/17 IDEXX box). I will tag Marje tomorrow AM on it - that way her comments will be in a shorter condo - but it is there if anyone wants to look.

His HCT/Hematocrit is still in good range. That's one to look at for anemia. Gizmo's is 36.3 and Neko's IM vetty wasn't too worried when Neko's was in the upper 20's. Good to see his other kidney values came down some. :)

I am thrilled with the bw. Wish I could get some potassium into him as I know it would make him feel better but he will not eat food with it added so I am at a loss. At least it hasn't dropped any more.
