Radar has not been eating well the last few days in spite of giving Cerenia and ondansetron and mirtazapine. After staying up with him until nadir last night trying to coax him to eat constantly I just couldn't give insulin this morning. His numbers have been high partly because I've been giving him Orijen cat and kitten food which is much higher in carbs than what he's used to in an attempt to get calories, any calories, into him. This morning when he wouldn't touch the baby food that he's always is willing to eat a little of... I took him to a vet we haven't seen before. I hoped for some help with getting Radar to eat and maybe some ideas about what's going on with him. Instead, I found myself nodding and smiling with a few cans of Royal Canine a/d in my hands. Radar has happily eaten a whole can of the RC a/d and has started on the second can. I just tested him and he's 282 which is high but he's had no insulin today and he has come down from the 471 that the vet got in the office. So I'm monitoring and feeding today as often as Radar will eat. I'll increase the dose tonight to 3.75 because it seems that he needs more insulin right now and we'll see where he's at in a few days when the depot has settled.

Sounds like a pancreatitis flare. Hope he continues to eat. Gizmo about a can of a/d and then quit it. I resorted to bad, bad food (FF T&G) and backed off the nausea meds, Mirtz and oain meds and gave him a Canna and it slowly improved.

Thanks for the encouragement. I wondered if it could be a pancreatitis flare. When we go see the regular vet I will ask them to do bloodwork...

What is "a Canna"?? maybe a typo?? because if it helped Gizmo I want to try it for Radar. :)

I give Gizmo 1/2 capsule mixed with food he can't resist. It helps with the pain, appetite and relaxes him. There are other, similar products out there too. I tried the oil and Gizmo wouldn't touch it.

I hope he is feeling better today. It is so scary when their appetites fail.

I'm glad Radar decided to find a food he will eat. Like you said any calories are better then no calories. Jack is food motivated, I mean, really food motivated. When he has a p-titis flareup he nibbles or doesn't even show interest in food. Hopefully it is just a little flareup and he is back to himself in a few days.

A few of the mom&pop pet stores by me have started carrying canna liquids. It is made from hemp and has CBD oils in it. It doesn't get them high, but helps with nausea, pain, etc. I can't vouch for effectiveness, but a few members here have had good luck with it. It was about $30 at the pet store for ~1 month supply.

Glad he'll eat the A/D. Does he seem to be in pain or nauseated?
Over the weekend he spent some of his time bread-loafed with his head down suggesting to me that he was in pain. He also had the classic lip licking but backing away from food. All his food dishes are now on top of paint cans... the things we do for love of our furry ones.

Sounds like full blown pancreatitis, Jan - bupe for pain, cerenia, ondansetron, appy stimulants, SQ fluids, (I use canna too)

Hope he is over it by now
