Dear Lantus Land Neighbors,

Clare was put on Clavamox about 10 days ago after her labs showed an unspecified infection. She also started on aluminum hydroxide about a week ago, as a phosphorous binder (aluminum hydroxide) since her levels have been too high.

Along with these prescriptions we decided also to give her a biotic, acidophilus, to help with the AB and Miralax to prevent constipation from the alum hyd.

For the past week DH and I have been visiting our children and grandchildren in England. We will be home on Wednesday. Clare and Coral are being cared for by Jenna, who's done a great job of keeping up Clare's medicines and making sure she's been eating and drinking enough.

Since Thursday night, Jenna's reported that Clare's been slowing down on her eating. With the weekend coming I asked Jenna to bring Clare to see the vet. After checking Her over, the vet gave her fluids with electrolytes and recommended that the AB be discontinued for a day. Clare was better during the next 24 hours and so on Saturday night Jenna (as instructed) started up the AB again. On Sunday morning Clare wouldn't eat and vomited. Constipation doesn't seem to be a problem. The AB has been discontinued again. Jenna will bring Clare back in to see the vet on Monday.

I'm checking for any advice you might have, since I know these conditions aren't new to my friends here on the board.

Thanks, as always, for your guidance.

Antibiotics can cause our kitties to be very nauseous .....it looks like that might be what's going on with Clare

You can ask your vet for some cerenia to help with that and see if it helps enough to improve her appetite. It has an injectable the vet can give too

Clavamox caused Simon to have a very bad upset tummy. As Chris recommended, ask for Cerenia injections. The injections really helped Simon. Also, you may try 1/4 tab of regular strength Pepcid. If Clare has kidney issues, it might be good to keep her on the Pepcid if it helps. Simon has CKD and gets Pepcid 2x/day to help him with tummy issues, along with taking ondansetron and Cerenia. Of course, check it out with the vet first.

Antibiotics are notorious for causing GI upset. About 2 hours or so after dosing, it may help to give a probiotic to replenish the good bacteria killed off by the antibiotic. Examples include Forti Flora, Intelliflora, and for those who tolerate dair, a teaspoon of plain yogurt with active cultures.

I hope you are having fun!! And staying warm!!

Is Jenna checking Clare's BG or ketones? I'd be sure she checks ketones. While it can easily be the a/b, it should have been making her sick all along.

Is Clare eating now? Is she lethargic? I'd really like to see Jenns check her ketone levels.

I hope it's just the AB upsetting Clare's tummy. Maybe a different AB would be easier on her tummy. I hope you're having a good trip.
