12/29 Radar - he's headed down the dosing scale

We've reduced Radar's dose 3 times this week as we've continued to reduce the amount of Budesonide he's getting. The LB has nicely formed poops and much more normal sized pee clumps today. He continues to groom and purr normally. He is not playing right now.

The biggest issue we have at the moment is consistent eating. With his frequent dose reductions this week, there's been a lot of syringe feeding to help him get enough calories. A couple of times early in the week when I needed to boost his numbers I gave him 20% carb Fussie Cat chicken with gravy and a little maple syrup when I needed to. On Christmas Eve he had a whole can of the Fussie Cat over the space of a few hours. Then he had a soft poop for the first time in a month. :eek:When I looked closely at the poop it looked like partially digested cooked chicken. My conclusion is that cooked chicken is causing him to not feel well. The raw chicken doesn't seem to bother him but I've cut way back on the amount he gets as a result of this new information.

So last night when his numbers started dipping I gave him a spoonful of pork dog food that I found and it brought him up 15 points. :joyful: I was scared to give him any more of the pork dog food because he's so sensitive and we always have to take new foods really really slowly. This morning he was super reluctant to eat so I decided it would be best to skip his shot and let the depot drain some more. We've helped him get started eating today with syringing and then about an hour ago he was able to eat on his own again.

As we begin a new week, I await a box from the pharmacy which contains liquid Budesonide so I can control his dose much better. I'm also brainstorming what options might be available for my hypo kit that I can use to boost his numbers when I need to without making him feel terrible for days afterward. If you have any suggestions, please share.

That was a great cycle last night!

What proteins/other ingredients are you trying to avoid in the hypo kit foods? Non chicken does limit things. I know First Mate makes a turkey pate that is 20%, if you can find it near you. Koh@ kangaroo stew is 22%. Merrick LID duck is 15%.

Yes, I was also really happy with his numbers last night. :woot:
Other than avoiding chicken, I also don't give him any fish. I try to avoid guar gum, and carageenan as I suspect he doesn't do well with those either.
He doesn't like turkey :( but i hadn't thought of kangaroo

I called my specialty pet food store to see what they have... and they have a kangaroo stew from Zignature. This is the same company that makes the pork dog food I tried last night. That company also makes a goat stew. I just don't know how to figure out the carb/protein/fat content.

First step is to write the manufacturers and get the As Fed values. This post by Marje tells you how to calculate calories from carbs and other %
The sad news for my project to get the "As Fed" Values for Zignature's food is that they consider this to be "proprietary" information and won't give me any detailed information for the wet food formulas. I let them know that I was disappointed because as a consumer I should be able to get this basic information about what is in the food I give to my animal and as a result of this policy, I won't be buying their food.

Take a look at ZiwiPeak. The carbs are likely low but they have a range of novel proteins and no gums or carrageenan in their foods. They have a canned food line and an air dried raw variety. Gizmo likes the venison and the lamb.
