After surfing all night long, China decided to take a break and head on shore for this afternoon to work on her tan....Since LagoonMeister Rusty is on duty, I guess she figured she'd take a break!!

Next Tuesday I'm taking DM to Branson again and of course Miss China is coming along, but she's always had a problem with some car sickness so last time I was at the vet, I asked for some cerenia to see if it'll keep her more comfortable while we're on the road.

How much should I give her and when to get the best results? They're 16mg tablets
 
I give Sasha 1/4 tablet (4mg), two hours before we leave and it does the trick. Now, she only weighs 7lbs 7 oz, so China may need a tick more. Here's what Tanya's site says about dosage:
For the oral form, a commonly recommended dose is 1mg per kg (2.2lbs) of body weight.Safety, pharmacokinetics and use of the novel NK-1 receptor antagonist maropitant (Cerenia) for the prevention of emesis and motion sickness in cats (2008) Hickman MA, Cox SR, Mahabir S, Miskell C, Lin J, Bunger A, McCall RB Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics31(3) pp220-9 states "The results indicate that maropitant is an effective, well tolerated and safe anti-emetic in cats at a dose of 1.0 mg/kg." A 10 lb cat (4.5 kg) cat would therefore receive 4.5 mg.Most people seem to buy the 16mg size and divide it as appropriate (into quarters for a 10 lb cat).


The pills should not be given in Pill Pockets or mixed with food as this may stop them being properly absorbed in the cat's body, but some people do give them this way. Many people place the medication in a gelcap in order to hide the taste.

Thanks @Tricia & Cinco ....looks like she could take 1/2 a pill then....she's over 17lbs (yeah...she's still too "fluffy")

Good to know about not giving with food too. Looks like I can T/F/S at 6am like normal, give her a mini-meal about 8'ish, the cerenia about 10 and leave about noon
 
Good luck with the Cerenia dosing, Chris! I know it helped P keep his food down. He got .32 of 10mg injectable when he was ~6.5lbs. I would assume that means 3.2 mg, which is in line with the dose Sasha gets.

ETA: I guess .5mg/lb would be correct
