Last Condo

Good morning LL!
I have some good news/bad news with Clyde and his eating last night.

The good news is last night at his dinner time I put down 3oz of food. Although he didn't eat it within the 2-3 hours I was checking, it was eaten by morning.

The bad news is this morning (as of this writing) he hasn't touched his breakfast. But I at least know he ate something in the last 12 hours. I don't know when, but I know he's not starving himself.

In the comments column of his BG spreadsheet, I've started to record how much food I've weighed out vs consumed. As much as I want him to loose weight, I don't want it to happen in an uncontrolled manner because it can't be good for him.

The upside is, his BG was 94 this morning.

Clyde spent some time in bed with me this morning just wanting to be petted. He does this strange thing where if you rub the right spot on his back just in front of his tail, he will start grooming his chest uncontrollably. It's a sight to watch.

Right now, he's spending a lot of time in the spot where he and Max curled up together on the bed in the spare bedroom. When he's not there I'm finding him on my bed or on the floor between my bed and the dresser.

Eat Clyde, 'K? I know it is worrisome when appys waiver. I really have the feeling that Clyde is missing Max... i do believe that cats grieve too. I've seen many of mine go through it when one of their fur-buddies has passed on. I hope Clyde's appy will be better. I like the comparison you are doing, and hope it offers some insight. I sometimes believe too that the more regulated our sugar kitties become, the less they crave food. Just a thought.

In the mean time, BG's are great. Surf well today Clyde!

HAHA on the rubbing and the uncontrolled grooming. I had a cat that did that, same spot and he'd go crazy. Too funny.

Thank you for your support. I'm hoping it is just that Clyde is missing Max and he starts to eat more soon.

I hadn't been paying close attention to how much each one individually was eating, just whether or not there was food left in the dish at the end of the day. There previously there wasn't any food left over but I don't know who was eating what. Max always came out like clockwork for meals. The old saying, "there is no snooze button on a cat that wants breakfast," couldn't have been more true with Max.

For better or worse, I can now see exactly what Clyde is eating. Clyde has his own gravitational pull. Ok, not really but it seems like he does. He's a very big cat at 19lbs. I will track his eating habits over the next week and see if it looks like his appetite picks up at all. If it doesn't pick up after a week, I think I'll have the vet look at him just to make sure there isn't anything else going on at the amount of food he is eating is safe.

I've started tracking how much food I'm putting out vs what he's eaten. Unfortunately, I only have a single 24 hour period of data so far. Definitely, not enough to draw any conclusions to see if there is a pattern forming or not.

He ate 3.8oz of food in the last 24 hours. It's some but not a lot. He ate 3oz last night and only 0.8oz during the day today. It doesn't look like he ate anything in the last four hours. His dish looks untouched.

If he eats tonight, do you think I can wait until Monday to talk to the vet so I can collect more data? If he doesn't eat tonight, I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning. 3.8oz of food is not a lot for a 19lb cat. If I did my math correctly, it's around half what he should be eating every day.

Do you think his lopsided eating could be why his PMBG is at the higher end of normal/slightly above normal? The good news is his evening +4 is only 68.

I'm hoping it's only because he's grieving for Max but his PMBG has been higher then the AM since the middle of Dec with a few exceptions so it is possible something else is going on. Unfortunately, until now I had no good way of telling how much each cat was eating.

Punkin weighed about 13-14 lbs and he ate about 9oz of fancy feast per day + some plain cooked chicken. Compared to that, I think Clyde is definitely not eating enough.

I think I'd give the vet a call tomorrow. Cats can't go too long without eating enough. If they lose weight too quickly, they can develop a fatty liver. The liver actually clogs with fat and it's a very serious condition. So you may need to get an appetite stimulant to get him eating tomorrow if he hasn't picked up. Weight loss has to be done very slowly.

On the New to the Group sticky there is a post at the bottom about tricks to stimulate a kitty's appetite. Maybe one of those would help. I suspect his lack of eating is causing his lower blood sugar.
