Yesterday...

7th cycle on 10 units. The bounce broke last night and he got down to 87. I'm on call this morning so after feeding the cats, I skipped breakfast for 45 more minutes of sleep and a strong cup of coffee. Hope nothing critical happens today e_e.

When I see him starting to dive on the PM cycle, I want to slow the drop, but I don't want to keep him from reaching green - otherwise, I'll end up increasing his dose unnecessarily. I just wish I had a way to teach him to do this during the day instead of the middle of the night :arghh:.

Good job wearing those patience pants the last few days. The food balancing act is a tough one. Feeding LC or even some MC when there his a big drop early in the cyce will sometimes make the dive less dramatic. I found with Doodles, sometimes it did and other times no matter what or how much I fed him he'd still end up in shark territory.

Some kitties bounce worse from big, fast dives rather than the greens they see. You can always try something different next time or who knows, maybe Chino will decide to just keep surfing and skip the trampoline this time :)

I got a BG check at +7 because I had to hop on a conference call. As expected, it's still rising. I gave 0.5 units R and will test again at +9. Not sure if 0.5 units is enough to do much of anything, but my goals have changed. Using it to get him under 300 had positive short-term effects and negative long-term effects. My new goal is to keep him under 400. As long as I'm able to keep up with his Lantus needs, I should only have to use it to soften bounces and compensate for fur shots.

Ideally, your longer term goals would be to keep him under renal threshold as much as possible. That limit is somewhere in the low yellow/high blue range, and varies per cat. I do agree that if you get to a good Lantus dose, then just using R to cut bounces off at the kneecaps or compensate for fur shots (should you do them) is a good plan. And since he seems to be at a good Lantus dose, for this point in time, I hope that seeing more green will help bring down the upper range.

The other good thing about finding good dose (for at least a while), is that you don't need to stay up to see how low he'll go and can bring out the HC or MC to give yourself more sleep.

435... a lot of good that did.

Absolutely! I see @Bronx's dad 's success with giving Bronx R around the clock to keep him in safer numbers, and wish I could do the same, but my ability to monitor overnight is severely limited. Trying to get Chino under 300 during the day was giving him a few daytime hours in safer ranges, but keeping him in dangerous ranges overnight, so relying on Lantus alone as much as possible allows him to go lower at night, giving him more time overall in better numbers.

I can't wait until he starts having cycles like the morning of 3/23. For now, most of the greens are still happening on cycles where he's coming down from a bounce, where the rate the BG is dropping and how low it will go are unpredictable. I don't know how long it will take him to get used to lower numbers and stop bouncing so much, but I consider it a GREAT sign that he hasn't bounced to black in quite a while, despite the increase in greens and blues! :)
