How'd you know it was a fur shot? A few times I thought I had given one or my son also because I smelled the insulin on his scruff. I thought it was weird because his numbers were still pretty par for the course. I had a light bulb moment one day while drowning the insulin. I can never get a correct dose pulled the first time. I noticed sometimes the drops rolled down the needle. I figured that must be where the smell comes from; my sloppy insulin drawing skills! :p:facepalm:

My vet showed me to tent then pull skin over the needle. I believe she said to do it that way because taking the needle to the skin could result in needle going straight through. Just another suggestion. I will also note. I "tent" but pulling his fur up not his skin.

That sounds meaner than I thought it would; pulling his fur.

I don't tent at all when giving the insulin shot. I simple part the hair somewhere around the chest / flank and slide the needle in at about a 45 degree angle under the skin.
I do tent for the B12 injection as that needle is a bit monstrous & first time I failed and gave myself a bit of a boost.

Husband knows how to give the insulin injection and does well with that , however he's a bit rubbish at the ear test .

Hope your OH suddenly gets the feel of it all.
