OTJ Trial FAIL
Yesterday's Condo

Well, it looks like Sammy is gong to need a little more insulin support. I guess I saw this coming from the start of the trial but I was really hoping he would pull it off. And I am so happy that it happened before I left him home while I went off on a 12 day retreat. At least now I will take him with me and will be able to treat him before his numbers get too out of control again.

I started him off at .1u based on @Jill & Alex (GA) suggestion last night. I know it will take a cycle to two to build up the depot again, and I guess if we don't see some action by Wednesday night then I can up the dose Thursday morning.

What I am hoping most for is a more normal curve so I can stop freaking out about the inverted curves. I just want a nice normal cycle. Even if it means that he has to be on insulin a bit longer.

I am not sure how Sammy will handle the 90 minute trip to camp Wednesday morning. On day 2 of the trial when he went up to the 170's I did take him out for a trial ride for about 45 minutes to an hour, and he did okay. He started to get antsy about 10 minutes out from home. but the rest of the time he was pretty good. So I am hoping that the car ride won't be a problem. However, he did drop 20 points in that hour, so I am sort of nervous about him being on insulin and being stressed. He has proven to me that he is one of those cats who has dropping BG when under stress.

I hope everyone has a great day, sending vines out to everyone who is in need.

Sorry to hear Sammy needed a little boost of insulin. It is good you are able to take him to knit camp with you. Hope he decides he doesn't need the boost for long.

So sorry it didn't work. Maybe Sammy knew you wanted to take a trip and thought he was going to keep you at home. Fingers crossed the travel goes well, hopefully he will surprise you in a good way.

At least the timing was good. I'm sure Sammy will do well on the trip to camp. Do you know this essay on traveling and camping with special needs cats? It was written by a board member a few years ago and has lots of good tips:

Have a good trip to the camp/retreat and don't worry about the aborted trial. You would have worried about Sammy if you had left him home!

I, too, hope that he just needs a bit more support before restarting the trial period again. Like the old addage states... If at first you don't succeed, try... try again. :) You'll get there! Have a wonderful and safe trip. :) I'm sure that Sammy will do fine. :)

:bighug: I'm hoping he just needs a little more support and you will soo be on trial #2.

That is what I am hoping for. So far we are having a nice curve, which is so much better than those wacky numbers we were having before. I expected it to take a bit of time for him to respond because I figured the depot had to fill, but he has come down nicely this morning.

It is really amazing what such a tiny amount of insulin can really do.

I will probably be more stressed than he will. I am going to a retreat with 20 other ladies, some of which are allergic, but I am sure that those who aren't will be happy to love on Sammy every day. He will probably be in heaven. LOL!

I'm so sorry the trial didn't work for Sammy this time around. I'm sure he'll be back on a trial soon - maybe, like Rosa on her first trial, he just needs another few weeks at a tiny dose for that last little bit of healing. :bighug:

Yes, I keep going back to Rosa's SS and try to remind myself that even though the first trial didn't take that does not mean that after a little more support that we can't try again. And like I keep saying I am just glad it happened before I left verses while I was gone.

Rosa's never been one for doing anything 'by the book' - in fact if she ever found 'the book' she probably ripped it up instead of reading it!! ;) Sammy might well be the same - throwing you one last curve ball before he decides he's really done with the insulin. There's always time to try again and I agree, better now than while you're away and not able to do anything about it.

Tina, I hope you and Sammy have a lovely, peaceful time at the retreat. The retreat I go to has resident kitties, which enhances the experience for me. I'm sure he'll be get tons of petting and love while he's there with you.

I purchased a harness so that I will be able to take him outside if the weather is nice. He loves to be outside, and I would just hate keeping him cooped up in my room. Some of the ladies attending the retreat are allergic to cats so he wouldn't have full run of the cabin, but that suits me fine because I would freak out if I couldn't find him.

Too bad he's back on the juice, but at least you're able to take him with you! He's looking good today....hopefully very soon you'll see a successful OTJ trial!!

Vet appointment went well today. @Marje and Gracie, We ended up going ahead to do the full general panel and CBC. I posted some of the numbers but there are a few I am unfamiliar with. I will post a list tomorrow of the ones I don't know where to post.

I got Sammy a couple of new cat nip toys at the vet today as a special treat to have at camp. Plus, I will be taking two new KitNip Boxes to give him a new toy just about every day. I have his bed and blankets packed and even have a small scratching post bed to take with us. I am taking way too much stuff myself and then adding Sammy's supplies on top of it is just crazy. I hope I can fit everything in my car.

I will check in tomorrow morning and through the day, but once I leave the office I will probably be extremely busy packing the car and the van. We are leaving first thing Wednesday morning.

I'm glad you've restarted insulin. It was hard watching his BGs skootching up. He's doing so well - just hang in there and try not to be discouraged.

Have a great time at Knit Camp. It sounds like a blast and Sammy may have fun being the mascot if he gets to come out from your room. I took punkin with me on 2 quilt retreats with friends and he enjoyed being the center of attention.

I wouldn't be surprised if those "allergic" ladies didn't have to have a little "petting time" in too...After all, who can resist an "extra sweet" kitty like Sammy??

Have fun and I'm sure Sammy will do great too!

Best of luck with the restart, I hope it's a short one.

Have fun at knit camp. It'll be nice having Sammy in your room at the end of the day.
