Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
Simon had a fairly uneventful evening -- a very good thing! After giving him 150 ml of fluids last night, he got his dose of bupe and went to bed. I set up the automatic feeder to go off 2 times in the night and he ate both snacks as well as finishing up his dinner from earlier. The buprenex, cerenia, and fluids must be making him feel a little better. He is still not his usual perky self, but hopefully, I got everything in place in time and his recovery will not be too bad. He is still a little wobbly but I'm sure the pain med has something to do with that. I gave him .25 less than his usual 3.5 dose of insulin since he is only 91. I have to be out of the house for about 1 1/2 hours this morning and don't want him going too low. DH and I will be playing tag team today to make sure one of us is always here except for the 1 1/2 hours this morning.

We are scheduled to go out of town for a much needed break for DH's birthday this upcoming weekend. I really hope Simon is back to normal before Thursday or I may have to cancel the trip. Our wonderful cat sitter is going to be staying here but I don't want to leave if things don't look so well. We will only be about 2 hours away so we can always come back if there are any problems.

Thanks again for all your healing vines. Y'all are the best!

I'm glad to hear the results from the ER visit are something manageable. Pancreatitis is no doubt miserable for Simon but you know how to handle the problem.

I'm glad you got answers and Simon is already starting to feel better. I hate p-titis, but he's lucky to have a bean who is so quick to respond to any sort of "offness"! Sending along more healing prayers - I hope you're able to get away next weekend!

Simon did not eat his lunch today -- just a few small bites. I am going to try and give it to him again in about an hour. If he still won't eat, I will assist feed him a few days to, hopefully, jumpstart his appetite again. I had to do that last time and it helped.

A nurse that works with me gave me a Freestyle Lite glucometer and about 10 bottles of testing strips. Her husband recently passed away and was diabetic. It will be nice to be able to save money by using the Freestyle Lite, but it varied from 5 to 20 points today when I compared it to the Relion. It read lower and I have heard that it may happen with the Freestyle. Should I just forget about using the testing strips or do I adjust up a few points each time I use it? Is anyone still using the Freestyle and wondering about your experiences with it. Thanks for any assistance.

We used the Freestyle lite for a year or so - you'll see a characteristic blue and yellow spreadsheet with it. You can look at punkin's ss and see when we switched - i think in January 2012. All of a sudden the blue/yellow went to the rainbow.

They measure blood differently - it's not that you can't use it, but just be aware that in the higher range you're not going to see the high highs that you may have before. In the lower numbers they are close enough to use. I wouldn't change the #s in your ss, just label it Freestyle and be aware of the difference. Maybe you could put a horizontal line across to say "Freestyle" and then when you've used up the strips relabel with another horizontal line.

Some glucometers measure plasma and some measure whole blood. I'm not sure which does which, but I believe that's the reason for the difference in the #s.

Julie, thanks for the info. Simon has pretty much always been a rainbow kitty so it will be interesting to see what happens if I make the switch. I have used the Relion confirm meter for so long, I am a little nervous about using anything else. I guess I can always use the Freestyle Lite as a back-up if I decide not go to with it.

I switched from the Freestyle to the Confirm. The difference in the spreadsheet was amazing. The Freestyle was a lot easier to look at. I didn't think punkin bounced til I switched to the Relion. When Punkin died I gave away everything, including the Confirm, but I kept the Freestyle. If DH or I ever became diabetic I wanted it instead. It's rated very well, I just think it measures differently than the other meters.

194 on the Relion and 172 on the Freestyle. Still trying to figure out if I should go with the Freestyle since I have all the strips.
Simon ate his snack at 3:00 today but did not touch his dinner. I just now had to assist feed him. I hope and pray things will be better tonight.

Hi Georgia,
I hope Simon will get through this flare quickly.
We used the Freestyle Lite for about a year. Rusty had mostly low numbers at that time, so it wasn't a factor. In low numbers there isn't a problem, but in higher numbers it gave many people a false sense that their cats were doing better than they actually were. It made me uncomfortable, when I found this out, so I stopped using it.

More vines for Simon,

Hugs and scritches
